I respect & believe women. I'm not posting anything re: #metoo (aside from this) because now seems like a good time to shut up/listen/learn.

Kandyland

posted October 17, 2017 #

Back in the winter of 2016, Thelma and the Sleaze embarked on a 31-show, 29-day "intra-city tour" in which they played sets everywhere from proper venues to McDonalds to snowy parking lots. The entire experience is captured in the Seth Graves documentary Kandyland. The trailer gives you a good idea of the antics and hardships involved. Despite never leaving one city, there's an entertaining road movie vibe to the whole thing as the band tackles different opportunities, vehicle breakdowns and band politics.

There's a few versions of the movie - depending on how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go.

Robert Beatty

I recently felt awe struck by the cover for Mister Heavenly's latest and discovered that Robert Beatty was responsible for its creation. If you weren't aware, he also did Kesha's latest, Dent May's latest, Ariel Pink's latest and works for Thee Oh Sees and Tame Impala. There's a plethora of work from bands I'm less familiar with but the artwork is every bit as astounding. I hadn't been consciously looking out for his work previously but I absolutely will be now.

I love Michael Fassbender more than I feel comfortable with. But The Snowman looks terrible.

We Own This Town - Volume 95

posted October 16, 2017 #

After the one-two punch of Glossary episodes, I wanted to get back to basics for Volume 95 of the We Own This Town podcast (that's the Nashville area focused podcast I've been running for ten years).
Serendipity led me to place Yon Ort and ONLY back to back - a track that claims "What you feel, isn't real" followed by a track that claims "we all die!" It's a haphazard goodness that I can't take credit for but I'm happy to bring to you.

Dirty John

posted October 16, 2017 #

The Los Angeles Times is following in the footsteps of Serial and Missing Richard Simmons with their episodic podcast series Dirty John. I wouldn't want to give a single thing away by discussing any of the details (seeing a photo of the subject is probably more than enough) but it's a compelling listen filled with questionable decisions and alarming twists.

Episode 1 is embedded below but I suggest firing up your favorite Podcast app and subscribing for the full six episodes.

Vac-tastic Plastic

Vintage Halloween is, inarguably, the Best Halloween so it's great to see Retro-a-go-go! keeping the vibe alive with their Vac-Tastic Plastic Masks designed by Doug P'gosh. Each of these retro looking masks is about 2 feet tall, which means wearing them will be awkward and bizarre - aka perfectly weird. I love that the designs range from a Mars Attack alien to a Zombie Astronaut to a suave Dracula. A little something for everybody.

Friday Videos - Oct 13th, 2017

posted October 13, 2017 #

It's Friday the 13th! The world is already plenty strange so maybe don't go too nuts in celebration but maybe just stare at this page for awhile and remember the good things.

Have you seen the #ThisSongWillChangeYourLife meme? It's pretty wonderful and I hope it makes its way to YouTube.

Shaboi, 2017

posted October 13, 2017 #

Eight years ago on this day, Friday, October 13th, 2008, the one and only release from Shaboi was unleashed on the world. Curse Walk is ten songs of Halloween tales spanning an absurd number of genres - country folk, rap, electronic instrumentals, spoken word cautionary tales and even an R&B lament for spiritual freedom.
Given that it's mid-October, now is the perfect time to dive back in. It's streaming everywhere or you can buy the digital version if you're looking to throw some appreciation towards the ghoul responsible for it all.
