Don Shull is an 80-something year old folk artist that's been making
wood carvings,
ridiculous art and
whirligigs for friends and families for who knows how long. Fortunately, he agreed to showcase his work with the world with his first ever showing at
Elephant Gallery. If you have the chance, go check out his work. If you aren't anywhere close to the area - browse
here,
here and
here. Enjoy!

I've noticed quite a few massive murals around Nashville lately and wondered if there was some sort of group or arts commission behind them. Turns out, there is. The
Nashville Walls Project is bringing local and international artists to town and having them creative massive pieces on willing buildings. This
Guido Van Helten piece is absolutely stunning and unbelievably enormous. There are other quality pieces from
Chris Zidek,
Nathan Brown and
Adele Renault to name a few.
It may not seem like much but cities with enormous pieces of art everywhere definitely carry a different feel. Austin is great about it, Philadelphia is rife with them and I've always loved the ESPO
mural in Brooklyn, even if it's going away. Hopefully Nashville can continue to step it up and showcase more art of this size.

I love TVs in restaurants because that way my kids can watch a violent sex crime procedural while we eat sandwiches.

The work of
Chad Wys tends to fuse a lot of classic works of art with contemporary splashes of color and modern art destructive techniques. His
Arrangement in Skintones series reduces images to oblique patterns and his
Legato series create a simple color palette from an obscured image but it's his
Works on Paper that really drew me in. The Romaniticism busts fused with paint daubs and color scratches is can be quite minimal but there's an allure that's hard for me to resist.
Several of his works are available on
Society 6 as well. So if you're looking for a canvas print version, you're all set!

Like it or not, it's October. Which means
random ghosts,
pumpkin carving and candy corn rules everything around you. There are worse things.
- Stranger Things: The Game - Season 2 of Stranger Things is fast approaching and, of course, there's a retro videogame tie-in. I'll be real tho, it doesn't look awful.
- Sound Archives 17 - nothing particularly wacky or outrageous here, just some wonderfully done motion graphics.
- Untitled Goose Game - speaking of games, this looks great! An indiegame where you play a mischevious goose? Yep.
- Austin Rogers: Jeopardy Champ - this guy rides the line between adorable and unbearable. Fortunately, he falls on the side of adorable more often.
- Pixel 2 Announcement - I don't share this reaction to the Pixel 2 but I sure do love hearing this. Audio absolutely required.
- Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling lose it in interview - just two dudes cracking up on their press tour. Pretty adorable.
- Tom Petty - Don't Do Me Like That (1979 SNL) - the video here is askew to avoid content detection takedowns but it's a solid performance. It's literally impossible to pick a favorite Tom Petty song, he just has way way too many, but this one has always felt great.
Frank Chimero made this
Tom Petty playlist and it's real good. I suggest a follow.
