I have watched this about a hundred times this morning. Every loop is rewarding.
Ariel Pink - Time to Live - I have a feeling this song is a very love it or hate it kind of scenario but I absolutely love it and the video just makes it that much more enjoyable.
Kilby Snow - Troubles - this guy was a virtuoso on the autoharp and Autoharp Champion of North Carolina at the age of 5. This performance is from the 1960's and is entrancing.
The site 80s.nyc compiles a huge repository of images into a browsable Google Map of New York in the 1980's. Many of the images are, unsurprisingly, fairly low resolution but the exploration of all the different neighborhoods certainly makes up for any lack of clarity. Parts of the Lower East Side look remarkably similar but, just up the street, it's a foreign landscape. Times Square, while scary at the time, looks great and anywhere along thepark is worth a view. But if you want to get really adventurous, dive into different areas of Brooklyn. My old apartment looks pretty much exactly the same but there are so many weird and beautiful spots, totally forgotten.
Tune in to your local NPR station at 2pm ET/1pm CT today for a World Cafe Session courtesy of POLY. They'll be playing selections from their debut album Let's Have an Adventure and probably having a wonderful time doing it.
UPDATE You can now listen to the whole session anytime you want.
I don't want to jump the gun on Halloween too much but with the recent passing of Basil Gogos, I think it's a fine time to visit the vast troves of monsters, creatures and Rob Zombie's that the man painted. This Church of Halloween repository is a great place to start and then you can read more about his life and work over on The Times or good ole Wikipedia. The depicitions of Frankenstein's Monster, Bride of Frankenstein and the more vintage Dracula's have such an empathy for the characters - monsters just trying to make it in the world.
I can't tell you how handy the tiny little scratchpad app Tyke is. It's basically the same functionality as OSX Stickies or even just an empty Notepad doc being open but conveniently tucked away into the menu bar. Simplicity at its finest. Thank you @torrez.
Now I'm happy announce this accompanying video for "Iridescent", the second track of the album. It's taken directly from the game and showcases the unique aesthetic you undertake traveling to "The Object" - the primary, ambiguous, objective.
Get the album here or stream it anywhere. The limited edition cassettes are going fast, so get those if you want a physical piece of the release.
Bushwig is a yearly drag, arts, fashion and boutique festival that's been around since 2012. It carries the mantle of Wigstock, a drag festival from the 1980's started by Lady Bunny that celebrated gay culture and community during a time when gay culture was not nearly as accepted as it is now.
There's much to be said about the importance of such events but, for now, let's focus on the specific activities of Bushwig. The two-day event gives a literal platform to performers to showcase their drag performances and high-art fashion constructs. In short, it's like a Comic-Con but without the focus being around anything specific, just your own self-expression, whatever that may be.
The variety of creativity - most of which is handmade - is beyond abundant. Here are a few spots to dive in but be prepared for rabbit holes on rabbit holes of discovery:
