JT Merry

posted September 26, 2017 #

James Merry is a hand embroidery artist, originally from Gloucestershire in the UK, now based in Iceland where he has been living and working with Bjork since 2009.
That information should be all you need to know to dive into JT Merry's body of work. The Bjork headpieces are, unsurprisingly, beyond description. There are some other excellent art pieces and commissioned work smattered throughout but it's safe to assume that the majority of time and work is put into those stunning embroidery sculptures.

Arrival Short Film OST

posted September 25, 2017 #

Back in May, I posted about the short film Arrival from Alex Myung. It's a dialogue-free, hand-animated, coming-of-age tale about an LGBTQ couple traversing the complexities of relationships and adulthood. It's also scored by Upright T-Rex Music, who composed a beautiful set of arrangements to help tell the tale of Myung's protaganist.

Without further ado, I am proud to announce the limited edition soundtrack will be available on October 20th via yk records. Of course it will be streaming everywhere but I really wanted to take this opportunity to do something extra special with the packaging - so we pressed this to a full color Picture Disc featuring Myung's art.
As you can hear from the first preview track, 1,000 MPH, it's a sweeping score with energy and 12-piece orchestration behind it. It's a short film so the songs are also short but the full soundtrack is absolutely delightful to listen to.

Pre-Order the vinyl and then watch the film (it's free!).

Forest Conner Shouts Outs

posted September 25, 2017 #

Over the weekend, the NY Times ran a piece discussing gender equality in tech and how there is a growing divide between men and women. Largely, there's a faction of men that feel that HR is being too aggressive and that women are ruining the tech world. I'm all for free speech and hearing a wide range of opinions but, clearly, this is bullshit. I am sure there are specifics that could be argued until the cows came home but to say that Women do not belong in tech is a grotesque statement. I can't imagine all readers of this site not agreeing.

In response, my co-worker Forest Conner took to Twitter with a 24 tweet response about all the amazing women he's worked with at VHX and Vimeo. It's far from comprehensive but I love the notion of actively calling out all of the women you work with to disprove the inane notion that there is a divide in skill level. Given that Forest and I work at the same place, I certainly agree with him.

If you have the inclination, take a moment to give some accolades. It's completely absurd that this would be necessary but there's no realm in which doing so is a bad thing.

Mark Maggiori

posted September 25, 2017 #

I can't say that I ever thought I'd be drawn to paintings of the Old West but looking at the work of Mark Maggiori, it's hard not be pulled in. In particular, the clouds are completely entrancing. Pieces like And The Mountains Echoed or Heart of a Loner set an instantaneous mood of the lonesome existence out in the barren plains. Also, the depiction of clouds in many of these pieces is absolutely spellbinding. I am transfixed.

Friday Videos - Sept 22nd, 2017

posted September 22, 2017 #

If you haven't already, go check out the new Coupler album I announced this week. You're gonna love it. I got more brewing before the end of the year as well.
  • Weird Simpsons VHS - an art project to re-animate The Simpsons intro with a bizarre style. It's from 2015 but it's safe to say this is the best thing I'll see in 2017.
  • Isle of Dogs trailer - I was fully prepared not to enjoy the latest animation effort from Wes Anderson but I'm pleasantly surprised by this. Looking forward to it now.
  • Conor McGregor Shooting Stars - this is part of a meme that I don't fully understand and don't want to. I just enjoy it.
  • Monkey Shave - I can't say I condone having a monkey as a pet, nor would I assume that they enjoy a shave but it's hard to believe this guy isn't liking it to some degree!
  • Nic Cage on Wogan - six minutes of real-life Cage being insane. Two minutes in he starts to disrobe. This is, absolutely, an endurance challenge.
  • Invention 2: Pattern Recognition - as posted earlier this week, check out this AI powered, stop-motion video from the new Coupler record, Gifts from the Ebb Tide.
  • Doctor and the Medics - Spirit in the Sky - this over-the-top 80's band has such a fascinating look and amazing videos, it's worth a deep dive. What they don't have is an original take on this song, it's pretty amazingly straightforward for a band that looks so bonkers.
I'll also go ahead and recommend you watch Sand like Liquid and this new Bjork video (I don't care for the song but her visuals are untoppable).

Hugo Moreno

French artist Hugo Moreno has a portfolio of commercial and personal projects that span a wide range of styles. It's hard not to be impressed by the likes of Rocket & Groot or Powerpuff Girls involvement but the personal projects like Walls, Magnatron or a proposed Zelda game are equally entrancing.

I'm throwing in a few of my favorite images from perusing the portfolio but a full deep dive will surely yield their own inspiring rewards for you.

Jenny Odell

posted September 21, 2017 #

It's hard to pinpoint a project from Jenny Odell that I like the most. Her art pieces almost always involve some aspect of technology that gives them an extra sheen of cultural relativeness. This Satellite Collections piece sums up her vibe well for me:
The view from a satellite is not a human one, nor is it one we were ever really meant to see. But it is precisely from this inhuman point of view that we are able to read our own humanity, in all of its tiny, repetitive marks upon the face of the earth. From this view, the lines that make up basketball courts and the scattered blue rectangles of swimming pools become like hieroglyphs that say: people were here.
This kind of thinking applies to other projects like Google Floorview or the ever-so-delicate Primer collection.

Each and every one is worth browsing through, so take the time to do so!
