We've been covering Joe Arpaio for more than 20 years. Here's a couple of things you should know about him... 1/many

The best respite I have all week is browsing for the cover art on Friday Videos. It's always a treat. This week I ran across
this thread that is absolutely brimming with tears of laughter. I suggest you partake.
Thanks to
Renaud I also played this
Shaker Loops song about 20 times this week. Oddly captivating.

I love a good
datamosh. Regardless of it being intentional or a mistakenly missing keyframe, I love the aesthetic. The
Youtube Artifact account compiles these mishaps into a stream of wonderful glitches. While I certainly enjoy seeing a
weird dog man or
Muppet remnant, I'm extremely drawn to the errored out pieces that feel almost
painterly. If
this were hanging in a gallery, I'd think it was the birth of a new movement. There really is a true beauty to many of these that should be regarded as more than just a funny hiccup in the system.

The new
Slowmotions video for "Banker"
premiered yesterday and I'd be a fool not to take the opportunity to crank out some GIFs of the creation. It's a lot of fast cuts and crazy color palettes - two factors that don't often work great with the format but I think they turned out quite nicely.

Makeup and Vanity Set posts a
lot of interesting items on his feed but I was recently struck by
this link to the
Wolf Fifth Archive, a repository of "over 100 avant-garde LPs from the 1950s to the 1970s."
It's impossible to know where to start when looking at a vast archive of unknown music like this but I'm a fan of following the rule of thumb that if the cover art is appealing, give it a whirl. This doesn't always work but it can have good results. This
1968 Music Today LP is a great example - good cover and compelling music. This
1970 Clavecin 2.0 cover is strange and the harpsichord onslaught within is a nice pairing (abrasive but hard to tune out). This
1975 Wlodzimierz Kotonski cover and music pairing is
perfect.
I know nothing of any of these artists or albums. My curiosity lies entirely in clicking on a compelling image and see what lies inside.

I am extremely happy to announce that one of my favorite tracks from the second
Slowmotions album,
The Domes, now has an official video. The kind folks at
For the Rabbits have
posted the premiere for "Banker" and you can partake in all its mixed media glory
now.
Here's a nice bit of insider info from songwriter Andrew Brassell on its creation:
Contrasting dark subject matter with upbeat music or imagery is something I've been interested in for a while and I think that fits in with why I animated large parts of the video and used my own drawings. I like creepily endearing things and art that is pleasing or interesting enough to draw you in and get you closer to whatever subject matter is at the heart of it, no matter how dark or unpleasant that may be. That's how I like to think my art is and I think it pairs well with the song.
There's also something distinctly 90's about the video. One of my friends saw an early version and told me that it reminded them of a trapper keeper, which I think is pretty spot on. I wanted it to be a colorful, messy collage and old videos of friends and family added some humanity to the mix. Essentially the video was made as a means of expression for me, but I'm happy to share it with anyone willing to watch.
It's truly an onslaught of imagery - childhood videos, ambient lights, animated faces, text and fast paced cuts keep it interesting.
Give it a
watch and then
dive into the album, it's one of those overlooked gems you'll come to love.

While searching around for a good pic of a vintage banana (don't ask), I stumbled into the photostream of
jbcurio. Within the 107 pages of images you'll find
absurd old newspaper scans,
amusing ad campaigns, personal photos and the occasional
indescribable gem.
I find these kinds of streams to be extremely inspiring for ideas and, if you're careful, a wealth of source material to cut and create into your own new masterpieces.

You likely know
Scott Campbell from his myriad of adorable works depicting pop culture (think David Bowie lounging atop a pile of Goblins or John Hammond riding a brontosaurus). He also has a somewhat
massive shop offering real world versions of these things - including these
Great Northern character pins from Twin Peaks. Rarely do you see
Pete as a purchasable collectors item but that fish cup certainly makes a strong case for it. Cooper, Log Lady and The Arm are always a welcome visage.
The latest season of Twin Peaks is such an intense viewing experience that requires research and thought and interpretation that it's nice to cut it a bit with something cute and straightforward.
