Dorothy Draper

posted August 30, 2017 #

I've been doing some reading and research lately on Dorothy Draper; founder of "arguably the first official interior design business." Dorothy Draper and Company became reknowned for "Modern Baroque" styles - mixing disparate elements from a variety of different movements that she managed to work together beautifully.

If you're familiar with her, then you know her iconic work. It is unforgettably unique and striking. If you have yet to take a deep dive, start with the Greenbrier Hotel, move into the Fairmont in SF and land on The Dorotheum - her renovation of the Metropolitan Musuem of Art cafeteria.

Even if there are patterns and flourishes that don't quite appeal to you, there is no denying her uncanny ability to create such immersive spaces with such wildly different pieces.

MAVS + Death Note

posted August 30, 2017 #

If you didn't catch it on the yk records social accounts, please take note that Makeup and Vanity Set is featured on the soundtrack for the new Netflix film, Death Note. If you have not seen the trailer, give it a watch and then you'll understand the stunning appropriateness of coupling it with the sounds of MAVS.

“Ono-Sendai” and “Blood Oath” are taken from WAVEHYMNAL and Charles Park III, respectively. While neither are yk records releases, it’s still great to see MAVS music get included in a project this size.

Pop-up Fires

It's a silly joke but this series of Pop-Up Fires from Axel Morin got a decent chuckle out of me. Watch the video versions for the most impact; simple and effective.

Tad Dorgan, The Father Of All Slang

posted August 29, 2017 #

For unknown reasons, this tweet about Tad Dorgan was directed at me the other week. Who is Tad Dorgan? He's a cartoonist from the early 1900's that is largely credited with creating absurd slang phrases like "for crying out loud", "cat's pajamas", "twenty-three, skidoo" and "drugstore cowboy" to name a few.

Browsing through his comic creations, it's hard to imagine him as a master of subtle language. The strips seem borderline nonsensical when viewed from 2017 and there's certainly cases for questionably misogyny (among other issues).

With that in mind, dive into an image search and see if you can make heads or tails of it. I'm definitely thank for the tweet to educate me on the Dorgan history; that's some party chatter trivia to take with you everywhere you go.

Help TX

posted August 28, 2017 #

If you were paying even the slightest attention this weekend you probably noticed that Houston is underwater. Hurricane Harvey swept in over the weekend and has caused catastrophic damage. The National Weather Service called it unprecedented and all impacts are unknown and beyond anything experienced. If you need the slightest convincing that it's miserable and dire, look at this photo of Nursing Home residents stranded in feet of water (luckily rescued at this time).

Nashville experienced similar devastation in 2010 with a massive flood and it's absolutely heartbreaking to see homes and lives ruined by this kind of event. You can read more about why it happened but, at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. People need assistance. Please find a relief fund that you believe in - United Way Houston, SPCA Texas, Food Banks, J.J. Watt fund, St Bernard's Rebuild Fund - and throw a few dollars their way. Even if it's small, it will help.

There's been a real news fatigue lately with the constant onslaught of bad news but given the power of the social economy, I hope we can all step up and put our money in a helpful place.

I Come To Shanghai - Low Pressure

posted August 28, 2017 #

It's been five years since the last I Come to Shanghai record, Eternal Life, Vol 2, so it's great to see that Robert Ashley and Chris Schlarb have wrapped up all the loose ends on the third official album, Low Pressure.
You can listen to the first track, "Swept Out in the Storm" and pre-order the record for it's official release on September 29th.

If you don't know the previous albums, dig in.

Dylan Reyes

Have been enjoying a dive through the portfolio and Instagram feed of Dylan Reyes. I love the overall starkness and intense saturation of much of the work. The ambiguous and fashion pieces are the best. His reel should not be missed as it really pushes these images to another level to see them in motion and edited together so well.
