Friday Videos - Aug. 4th, 2017

I want to know more about that cover gif. It is a lot of well intentioned, poorly executed, decisions resulting in Total Chaos. Love it.

Also, imgur/r/unexpected is bringing some real treats to my eyeballs this morning. Maybe it will for you as well. On to the playlist...
  • Married with Bananas - apparently The Gong Show is back and this couple sets the bar very, very high. Keep watching, it gets completely absurd. Also, the host is supposedly Mike Meyers in heavy makeup?
  • Dr. Phil, All Reactions, No Dialogue - somehow, it still works. Maybe better than actual episode.
  • Derpy Dogs in Slow Motion - sometimes you just need to stop and appreciate the Pekingese.
  • Everytime I Hear That Song - I believe this is Animal Crossing related but, regardless, that raccoon speaks to my heart and soul.
  • Birb - no horrible surprises, just delight.
  • Freestyle Dance Teacher - no words.
  • Optimistic Nihilism - wanna get bummed out but also watch a great animation? Want to maybe feel better about your meaningless place in the Universe because of the smallness of your influence? This could be for you.
Need a pick me up after that last one? How about 15 Minutes of Dank Bird Memes? This one got me real good.

Also, I have a feeling I'll be mining This playlist for awhile. Starts off rough, gets much better.

My Scientology Movie

posted August 3, 2017 #

Louis Theroux has a rather entertaining body of work but I was quite entertained by his latest, entitled My Scientology Movie. In it, Theroux hires actors to play specific Scientology members he can't get access to - namely David Miscavige and Tom Cruise. He also recruits ex-Scientology members to help educate and coach the actors on the the more shrouded parts of the religion. His no nonsense, somewhat aloof, personality really makes for some hysterical interactions with actual Scientology members who are not too happy about the project.

While it's not nearly as in-depth or revealing as the Going Clear movie, it's an excellent, highly amusing, accidental companion piece.

A Goofy Theory

I imagine much of this is old news but the works of Leon Chang are new to me and highly entertaining. Dip a toe in:
  • A Goofy Theory - surreal comic exploring the origins of one of Disney's oddest.
  • Twitter RPG - choose your own adventure via @usernames and wonderful pixel GIFs.
  • Bird World Soundtrack - a full fledged score to a game that doesn't exist. More on that here.
The Twitter RPG is certainly worth your clicks, if nothing else. Follow on Tumblr and Twitter.

I've used Transmit 4 regularly for the past seven years, I can't imagine a $35 upgrade not being worth it

NIN - Panorama 2017

posted August 2, 2017 #

Related to that Trent Reznor interview I was recently fawning over, here's the full Panorama 2017 performance from NIN. I watched it twice, back to back. I've never seen the band live and it was quite a treat to be able to hear them perform such a variety from their catalog. The light performance isn't as intense as previous tours but it's still quite a spectacle and the band themselves are as intense as I'd hope for, even for band having done this for 20+ years.

Bonus, they cover David Bowie from his final album, Black Star.

We Own This Town - Volume 89

posted August 1, 2017 #

I've really been trying to make a concerted effort to amp up my contributions to We Own This Town. While I was in New York, I kept up the site but didn't do a great job of posting new stuff to the site; mostly just because of the distance. Now that I'm back I'm finding it much easier to feel connected to the scene here and try my best to get the word out about all the great work flowing out of the Nashville area.

In fact, this edition of the podcast was finished a few weeks ago and I immediately started working on the next. I got so caught up on the influx of new work that I just forgot to post this compilation! It's a great problem to have. There's so much great music to work with, I'm getting ahead of myself. Have a listen and, if you enjoy, maybe tell a friend.

Trent Reznor, In Conversation

posted August 1, 2017 #

I never cease to be impressed by interviews with NIN frontman Trent Reznor. He is eloquent, hyper aware of his place in the musical landscape and always insight about the role of technology. This long conversation he recently had with The Vulture, In Conversation, is no exclusion to the rule. Interviewer David Marchese, while polite, pulls no punches in asking Reznor about the hurdles he had to overcome with The Fragile, the overwrought presentation of Year Zero, the impact of listening to "Hurt" with his kids and what his real feelings are on musicians getting in bed with corporations.

It is, unsurprisingly, filled with entertaining and pleasing responses from Reznor. It's impossible to pick a favorite passage but I really liked this bit on how the Internet demystified the gap between listener and artist:
One is the demystification of artists. Growing up, I didn’t know what Pink Floyd looked like and I didn’t need to know. In my mind, they looked like fucking wizards, man. I remember seeing a picture of Supertramp - and I loved Breakfast in America - and I was like, What the fuck?
That's probably the least eloquent thing he says in the interview but certainly among the funniest. If you're a fan, you likely need no incentive to go read. If you're not a fan, I do suggest a heavy skim for his bits on the ways the music industry is changing and the struggle artists undertake to endure past one weekend of streaming in the New Releases Spotify collection.
