Sam Bosma Art Prints

posted June 22, 2017 #

There's a magical, other worlds, quality to the work of Sam Bosma. Many of the art prints being offered depict films and series you may be familiar with (ie Chappie surrounded by familiar bots) but they somehow manage to maintain a fresh, original vibe... even when you're intimately familiar with the subject matter. There are plenty of original pieces mixed in that carry the same color palette that hints at some other, vaguely familiar, universe.

Radio Social, Justyn Iannucci

posted June 22, 2017 #

I've enjoyed the illustration work of Justyn Iannucci for some time but this recent work he did for Radio Social bowling alley really grabbed my eye. It's not often that you see an alley take the time to have custom graphics made for their lanes, particularly some that take a old school tattoo kind of vibe. It looks great and I'd take that vampire teeth bowling pin piece as an enamel jacket adornment, thank you very much.

Made With ARKit

posted June 21, 2017 #

If you aren't familiar, ARKit is a framework for Augmented Reality put forth by Apple that gets introduced with iOS 11. The ultra simple version explanation of it (as I understand it) is that cameras on your device detect the space and light in your environment and then place various virtual objects "in the room" with the intent of them feeling like they're real. That's AR in a nutshell but we're a ways off from having it be an everyday experience.

However, progress is being made and we're going to see these kinds of integrations explode in leaps and bounds over the next few years. Keep an eye on Made with ARKit in the short term to see examples of how this technology is being used. Currently it's mostly just planets in your kitchen or a pile of LaCroix cans falling from nowhere but there's plenty of possibilities headed our way. I, for one, am quite intrigued.

Self, Ornament and Crime Vinyl

posted June 20, 2017 #

Way back in 2003, Self recorded thirty some-odd songs for Dreamworks Records, as the intended follow-up to their previous release Breakfast with Girls. Around this time, Universal Music Group bought Dreamworks and the album never saw the light of day. Sometime in 2009, digital versions of the songs showed up but there's never been an officially sanctioned version of it. Until now of course...

Fourteen years after it's original slated release, Ornament & Crime will be released on vinyl, digital and CD via El Camino Media. You can pre-order it here. Oh, and they're also re-issuing all of the b-sides - entitled Porno, Mint & Grime - as an additional double record.

I've been listening to this band since 1995, twenty-two years, and still find pleasure in these songs so I'm glad to see that they're finally getting their proper release. If you need a good starting point for the new album, go here.

Birdcloud Subverts and Transcends Convention

posted June 20, 2017 #

I've seen plenty written about Birdcloud, the country duo known best for their lively, almost maniacal, performances but it's incredibly difficult to properly articulate exactly what they are. They aren't a comedy band but they are funny. They aren't intentionally controversial but they don't shy away from singing about questionable topics. They aren't romantically involved or downplaying the seriousness of LGBTQ relationships but they writhe on another on stage. In other words, it's complicated.

All that is to say that I found this Arkansas Times piece - Birdcloud Subverts and Transcends Convention - pretty damn close to the best representation of what they're doing. This is pretty perfect:
Having fun and partying are obviously important features to your songs, but you are also clearly making social commentary in them. Do you purposefully try to balance that out, or are you just making observations?

Kaset: Nuance is one of the first casualties of political conflict or social unrest. Our lyrics are nuanced, so there are multiple levels of partying to it. We have strong feelings about the hypocrisy and backwards thinking in the South, all the hatred in America, being a woman in this or any sphere, all kinds of stuff. But we're not gonna hit you over the head with it. You have to arrive at it through our fucked up performance. You may leave a show with an impression of it. Or you may leave with a hangover and a dumb smile on your face. By making lyrics dumb and party and the music style country, we are able to reach a lot of people other bands can't. Like playing an anti-capital punishment song in front of a state senator and for him to stop tapping his foot halfway through, that's a rare and important opportunity and it's one we get because our music is nuanced. And that's not saying a lot of our fans aren't geniuses, 'cause they fuckin' are. And I can say with confidence none of our fans are Republican state senators.
It's well worth a read through of the whole thing. And while you're at it, you may find a hint about an upcoming, unannounced, yk records release.

Brooklyn artist Rachel Jo is having a solo show at Grumpy Bert entitled All Naturale, a "visual collaboration of all things natural - plants and nudes." I love her simple, expressive, illustration style and the subjects work so well together that I imagine the show will be a real delight.
