How Did The Subway Get So Bad? Look To The C Train
posted June 6, 2017 #
I am fascinated by the subway. Having grown up in rural Tennessee, the only public transportation I experienced was the school bus. My college experience and most of my adult life was in and around Nashville, which has bus services but they're actually less efficient than walking many times, so I didn't use it very much.
Like most people that live in New York, I use the subway all the time. Sometimes it's disgustingly cramped, sometimes it's dangerously vacant (if you live here, your nose knows the danger) but it's still a helluva way to get around without having to own a car or participate in the madness that is New York Interstate Driving (a heart attack inducing experience).
But there's always been gripes about the subways lack of reliability. Lately, it's been getting much worse. This NY Times piece on How Did the Subways Get So Bad? sheds some light on the subject. The gist? Trains are kept in rotation that should have been retired years ago but a lack of properly applied funds and technology upgrades have trapped the system into a duct tape nightmare. Full renovations are eschewed in favor of keeping something running. I don't envy those in power having to work through this.
