I've seen a lot of FAIL videos in my day, so it warms the heart to see someone trying something absolutely idiotic and come out unscathed.
On to the distractions! Enjoy this mess:
- Redbone by Kermit the Frog - I really love the new Childish Gambino album and "Redbone" is one of the finer tracks. Hearing it sung by Kermit doesn't make me enjoy it any less. If you're interested, there's a whole slew of these variants on Youtube, some better than others.
- The Blend is Near - fantastic opening title sequence from Oddfellows for the 2017 BLEND Fest.
- Washed Out - "Get Lost" - new song / video released via Stones Throw. I love this animated collage style. Must investigate Harvey Benschoter more.
- Ultimate Hallway Swimming - I'm sure this phenomena is a solid four years old but I don't care, it's new to me. Had this been a thing when I was in school, I would have hoped to have seen it every damn day.
- Cheers Theme by Neil Cicierega - I was just talking about an alternate Cheers theme I'd like to hear and now this is released. Excellent timing.
- Pencils Laugh - 9 years ago this woman posted a slew of videos depicting a bunch of different laughs. Absolutely delightful.
- Roller Derby Alligator Pit - try to imagine the most 80's thing you can think of. Ripped dudes with insanely long hair in spandex or bonkers outfits? Check. Niche competitive sports that are likely scripted? Got it. Big Hair? Oh yea. Animals used in inappropriate scenarios? Unbelievably, yes. All this lacks is an awkward rap.
- Double Down trailer - a rather awkward movie trailer from an amateur director. If this guy doesn't end up on an episode of Outsider, I'll be shocked. This is one minute too long but those first 2 minutes, wowza.
- Worst Movie Lines Ever - it's quite NSFW straight outta the gate but there are some real gems of terrible writing and acting here.
- Super Erick - it's stupid but I enjoyed it.
There's also a
90 Minute Everything Star Wars compilation floating around if you're in the mood.

I've been listening to the
Off Camera with Sam Jones podcast for quite awhile now. His interviews with various actors are always impressively in-depth, thoughtful and amusing. The latest I heard in its entirety was with
Elisabeth Moss speaking on her experience on
Mad Men,
The West Wing,
Top of the Lake and
The Handmaid's Tale. It's fantastic to say the least and that's
one episode.
Long story short, Sam Jones has been doing this for seven seasons and spoken with countless individuals. He's been selling the individual video episodes
on VHX for some time but just recently launched
the subscription version. For a low monthly fee, you can get access to all the new video episodes
and support a show that has proven itself to do a phenomenal job.

I've been watching every episode of the VICE series
Outsider, which focuses on filmmakers on the far fringes. There's a melancholy that undercuts many of their stories but none has hit quite as hard as
the story of Laz Rojas. The Los Angeles filmmaker is best known for a demo reel he created in the early 90's in which he single-handedly depicts 102 different characters. As with many of the
Outsider creators, it's easy to laugh at the projects they've undertaken. Sincerity and earnestness often doesn't mix well with being somewhat amateur.
I highly encourage you to
watch the full episode as you quickly see past the awkwardness and discover that Rojas is an incredibly skilled editor, makeup artist and maybe not the worst actor. His living situation makes the whole thing heartbreakingly tragic but that just contributes to the compelling nature of his story.
After you've watched that, read through
this interview with
Outsider host Zack Carlson and VICE to gain even more insight into just what makes Laz Rojas tick. Then dive deep into
the Rojas film archive.

Many thanks to
Don for the heads up on the printmaking works of Austin based artist
Elvia Perrin. Her official site documents her works from 2017 all the way back to 2008, a fascinating journey to click through to see how her technique has changed over time. The
sprawling tentacles give way to
blocks of color which give way to
contained chaos and so on and so forth.
She also has an
Etsy store where you can purchase prints and an
Instagram where you can get a regular dose of her new work.

Enjoying plenty of work from the Instagram of
Andy Kugler. He's largely a DP / Camera Operator working out of NYC but has shot pieces all over. You can see his diverse handiwork in the
Horrible Weather video by Adia Victoria or even
Rap Song, the SNL skit. Like I said, diverse.

In 1984, artist and designer Ikko Tanaka was establishing the brand for
MUJI; the simplistic home goods and clothing store that emerged from Japan in 1980. As part of this branding exercise, he hired Haruomi Hosono (best known for his groundbreaking work as a member of
Yellow Magic Orchestra) to compose in-store music. The results are contained in a very rare cassette entitled
Watering a Flower that includes two of the three commissions.
Fortunately for us, the Internet bears all kinds of fruit when it comes to discovering rarities. So, steer yourself over
here and hear all of the compositions, including a 30-minute piece entitled "
Muji Original BGM."
The two tracks that
were included on the cassette are hard to imagine playing in a store when listening from 2017 but it's refreshing to hear the results of such a collaboration.

Sean Doran took a bunch of
public domain images of Jupiter, collaborated with
Gerald Eichstadt for colorization and animated them into an approximate flyover of the gas giant.
I'd love to see this paired with a variety of different music so if there's any tool out there that adds a new soundtrack to Vimeo videos; get at me.

Every year,
Siggraph showcases a bunch of cutting edge computer graphics, hardware and forward thinkers. There's always
something interesting that comes of it if you're paying attention. This year, I've stumbled on the
MetaLimbs project -a "Multiple Arms Interaction Metamorphism." The gist of it is that you can attach two robotic arms to your back and control them with your feet. The
demo video is pretty entertaining, if only for the Doctor Octopus vibes it puts out.
The jury is still out on if this is actually practical or not. There's certainly an angle of usage that could benefit those that have control of their feet but not their arms. There's even an angle of just having a benefit of more arms, why not?! Regardless, it's worth a peek.
