I can't believe I'm intrigued by it but the
Elbow player is a fascinating device. At the core of it, it's a tape deck, plain and simple. It clips on to a cassette and is able to activate the
tape transport and playback the audio via a standard headphone jack. It's informed by the functionality of a vinyl tonearm and about as minimalistic as can be. Give a spin through the
press packet for more in-depth insight on how it works.
My knee jerk is to write off cassette culture as outdated and a bit of a ridiculous endeavor for bands but that is firmly
incorrect. Tapes are cheap to make, have a fidelity that is unique to the format and give fans an opportunity to buy something physical from a show. Like it or not, buying a download card just isn't all that satisfying.
So, with that in mind, I applaud the Elbow. It's clearly not for everyone but it's an excellent exercise in making something great for a particular audience.

As often happens during busy work weeks, I didn't have much an opportunity to be inundated with humorous and bizarre videos. That is to say, selections are slim this week but I think you'll still find them entertaining. Or at least they'll serve as a proper distraction to the
world around you.
I dunno why it's not on YouTube but this
Stevie Nicks Fajita Roundup SNL sketch is worth your time, even if it's not embed friendly.

The Memphis based
Creative Works Conference is back. They've announced their
initial lineup - including
Ken Barber,
Naz Hamid,
Young Jerks, the women of
Ghostly Ferns and
Jena Blazevich to name but a few. Early bird
tickets are on sale now and will jump in price starting July 1st.
I don't attend many conferences but Creative Works is one of the few that I've spent some time at. The people running the event are incredibly nice and the event seems to draw a host of fun, supportive, wildly creative types from all over.

The
trailer for
8-Bit Generation sells a pretty compelling story around Jack Tramiel, the head of Commodore Computers and his rise to dominance over IBM, Apple and Texas Instruments in the early 80's. His reputation has been likened to Atilla the Hun, Jabba the Hutt and Darth Vader; not exactly pleasant company to keep.
In 2017, it's hard to imagine that the archaic blocks of early home computers were the result of a cutthroat arms race between such big companies but that's only due to our modern perspective. Those early home computers were as groundbreaking as an iPhone, if not more. Tramiel was, almost without question, an asshole in business but he certainly changed and formed our current world.
