Dear Europe

posted March 13, 2017 #

Erica Gorochow of Pep Rally gathered together a host of her talented animation friends to create Dear Europe, a letter to those living in the EU that have elections coming up that may be surprised how much apathy and incorrect polls can affect an outcome. The mission statement is simple:
Our hope was to impress upon our friends in Europe that the future is written by those who vote.
Beyond the admirable goals of the piece, it's also an impressive combination of animation styles that feel unique but never too disconnected from one another thanks to a common color palette. The music is by Upright T-Rex and there's alternate VO for German, Dutch and French audiences. You know, to help spread the word.

It's a great piece and well worth a share.

I stopped being friends with someone who ordered a burger, but asked the server to substitute a fruit cup for french fries.

Daniel Arnold NYT

I'm a longtime fan of Daniel Arnold. His street photography is always fantastic. Period. If you don't follow him on Instagram or peruse his collections on Vogue, you're missing out.

Add to that list, this NY Times profile. A great overview of his work and some excellent interview pieces describing his fascination with certain areas and types of people. I hope this column is a regular happening from now on.

Pin and Seller

The enamel pin game is strong throughout the Internet but I still don't feel oversaturated by it. It's still refreshing to see what people create. Lately I've enjoyed some of the offerings from Pin and Seller, a shop out of Phoenix paying homage to the likes of Bram Stoker's Dracula and Terry Gilliam's Brazil to name but a few.

Part of me wants to investigate just what is happening with that glitched out, somewhat terrifying, A Few Good Men GIF but I also feel great just letting it exist as a bizarre treat from the Internet.

Much of this weeks playlist comes from Hinman Hyperlinks - small batch, hand curated, artisanal hyperlinks. It's actually a thing. Sort of. I loved this but could not find an embeddable copy - so just be sure to enjoy on its own.

Happy Birthday, Pancho Chumley

posted March 10, 2017 #

Eight years ago today, Uncle Skeleton released his first album, Pancho Chumley, via my own yk records. It was the very first release for the label so not only is it the birthday of the record, it's a nice launch reminder of the label as well.
In those eight years, Uncle Skeleton's sound has greatly matured and changed. I'm sure he'd find it a bit embarrassing to have someone listen to this record now with that in mind but it's still got some great moments. I used to recommend everyone start with the super upbeat songs - "Renfro", "Diskoteq" in particular - but now I'd tell you go with "The Willow Green" or the delightfully melancholy "Chumley Giles."

It's on Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, etc. etc. So, listen along wherever is most convenient.

I'm still proud of this record and still extremely indebted to Ross for letting me put it out into the world as a means to start the label. It's a "hobby" but it's a great pleasure to continue working on.
