Mike Mills Deep Dive

posted January 30, 2017 #

I've been a fan of Mike Mills since his days as a graphic designer but his work as a film director has really taken my appreciation of him to new heights. If you have not seen 20th Century Women yet, find some time to see it very soon.. it's phenomenal. I posted some of this in the sidebar recently but if you missed it, please join me in a Mike Mills deep dive:
  • Mike Mills AMA - a great rundown of insight for the man's process, his inspiration and how he deals with criticism.
  • 1979.fm - a streaming radio station curated by Mills featuring the influential music from this era. There's a Spotify version as well but it's not as complete.
  • 1979 in Images - back in 2012 Mills compiled this five-minute video of stills from 1979. It's an onslaught but it's entrancing.
  • Lessons We Can Learn From Daisies - during the AMA, Mills says he was inspired by the Czech New Wave film "Daisies" for the sped-up psychedelic effect using occasionally in 20th Century Women. I had not heard of this film but it looks great. I feel like this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of inspiration to follow from Mills.

A Vampire Goes West

I know very little about Legowelt, a musician from The Netherlands that's been quiet for the last seven years but has returned with an "all out smackos amateur space jazz meets professional ambient experience." An insane description if ever there was one but, pleasantly, not inaccurate.
Thanks to Davis for the heads up.

Can't quit listening to this. Hopefully you feel the same. If your'e in the Nashville area, come out to this... as I'm going to ramp up the promotion for it in the next few weeks as best I can.

Hang in there, distractions await: If you're a glutton for punishment, watch Charlie Brooker discuss Trump, otherwise... just enjoy some GIFs or these feel good moments.

Tower Defense "Not Safe" B-Side

posted January 27, 2017 #

The Night of YK Records is right around the corner. One of the many bands on the bill is Tower Defense - the post-punk quartet that produces a blast of double-bass powered rock. My only complaint about their EP, Stay Inside, is that it leaves me wanting to hear more and more from them.
Fortunately, they've just released a brand new b-side from the same recording sessions; giving good reason to revisit Stay Inside and a nice reminder to come out Feb 10th.

WeWork: Plasma Design System

posted January 26, 2017 #

The WeWork rundown on designing their Plasma Design System may not have too many surprises if you've read other summaries of design systems but it's impressive none-the-less. It's always inspiring to see so much thought put into making a system that works to cover its bases before code is put down; as the luxury of such thought is not always possible.

Brinkley, Man Of The People

posted January 26, 2017 #

I realize I posted about them recently but ReplyAll has really been killing it lately for me. This episode, Man of the People, is not to be missed. PJ Voght explores the insane scams of John R. Brinkley and, more importantly, his use of new media to spread his falsehoods far and wide.
As you listen, I think you'll quickly make some comparisons to another high profile mouthpiece that manages to have people believe in him despite his clear falsehoods but that's not the part to focus on. The key takeaway is the lesson discussed near the end - "How do we keep falling for this?"

Melissa Keightley / friendswithpools

Lately I've really been enjoying the photography of Melissa Keightley, aka Friends with Pools. A large majority of it is quiet scenery and vacant spaces but not without some presence of humans. In fact, you could almost browse it as a post-apocalyptic photostream - a collection of images documenting a somewhat unsophisticated species. Or you could just enjoy the great color palette, typography and weird world we've created. Either way.

Mouth Moods

posted January 25, 2017 #

If you haven't inundated your ears with Neil Cicierega's epic mashup Mouth Moods yet, prepare yourself for a real aural onslaught. It definitely ebbs and flows between aggravating and unbelievable but the experience on the whole is what makes it so damn worthwhile.
Furthermore, if you haven't watched his XOXO Talk on being an "Internet Person", you should carve out some time for that as well.
