David Bowie - No Plan

posted January 9, 2017 #

Yesterday, January 8th, 2017 would have been David Bowie's 70th birthday. In tribute to him, a new EP entitled No Plan was released. The four song collection is comprised of Bowie's final studio recordings.

I've no doubt we'll see plenty of new Bowie be released for the next 10-20 years as they mine old recordings. I've no problem with this. Hopefully they treat all of it with the respect that they've done here - even releasing a companion video featuring a wall of static-y, UFO bearing, televisions.

Casey Affleck's Dark Secret

"We subscribe to easy narratives; reporters don’t want to irritate stars with unpleasant questions, and fans don’t want to complicate their adoration with dark details. At a certain point, there is no longer an easy way out."

Call me old fashioned but I think that real movies are just 12 frames of a horse galloping in a straight line. Anything else is just garbage

Friday Videos - Jan 6th, 2017

posted January 6, 2017 #

The first 2017 Friday Videos! Of course I want you to watch this Skyway Man video that just premiered on Stereogum but there's plenty of additional weirdness below. Enjoy!
  • DAYUM - a haunting walk along a crater edge.
  • The Yeah Boii Song of Memes - sometimes it's best not to understand the Internet.
  • Dave Grohl Mugging - In trying to find the SNL skit from `93 with RuPaul I stumbled on this perfectly edited little gem with Nirvana recording a show promo.
  • Andy Shauf "The Magician" - as previously noted, I've watched this so many times already and it continues to mesmerize me.
  • Vrak Ident B - a simple looping illustration animation for a Bell Media TV station in Canada. Delightful. via Chad.
  • Save the Phone - buncha bros doing some pool dunking. I hate myself for enjoying this, even slightly, but I do.
  • All Horn Sounds (As Of Now) - take a 6 minute journey through a wonderful series of honks. I love the genuine enthusiasm for this hobby.

Skyway Man, Stereogum Premiere

posted January 6, 2017 #

Look at this! The first official video from Skyway Man just premiered over on Stereogum.

I am sure I will rattle on about the concept of the album at a later date but this track, "Creation // Someday" is the first on Seen Comin' From a Mighty Eye and definitely sets the stage for the rest of the album. In fact, I'd recommend watching it as if it were a movie trailer. There's a story being told but you aren't getting the whole of it, just quick glimpses and flashes.

The Raspberry Pi RetroPie

Kind of loving this article on building your own Raspberry Pi Emulator. Why re-buy the NES Classic Edition when you can just nerd out and build your own tiny emulator with every game. Or, at the very least, the good ones. Oh, and it can do Sega, SNES, Genesis and more as well. Not too shabby.

I know these have existed for quite some time but I like how ARS Technica has framed it as a direct alternative to the beloved Nintendo.

The Bizarre World Of BBC Records

I would never label myself a Crate Digger in the traditional sense but I do find a sense of odd calmness when browsing through rows and rows of vinyl records. I typically keep an eye out for anything from Command Records as the cover art is usually insane and the music is always interesting.

After reading this piece on The Bizarre World of BBC Records it seems that I should be eagle eyeing anything from BBC Records and it's sub-labels (Beeb, BBC Records and Tapes, BBC Radio Enterprises, etc). Listening to this Essential Playlist from Jonny Trunk is enough to convince me. Great read.

GoMix

Note: This was quickly rebranded and is now called Glitch.

I'm pretty curious about the offering at GoMix - a Fog Creek product that lets you quickly and easily start developing apps, websites and random tools without really having to know too much code. It's akin to Zapier or Yahoo Pipes but just a bit nerdier - allowing you to get under the hood a bit more if you so desire. Being able to teach Alexa a new skill or create a slack bot without having to deal with anything close to an Amazon Web Service is definitely intriguing.

WOTT 81: Apollo Up

posted January 4, 2017 #

I recently asked the members of Apollo Up! to record a podcast discussing the writing and recording of their re-issued album, Chariots of Fire. I have now released said podcast over on We Own This Town and you can listen to it now. This is actually part one of two. In this edition, the band discusses the recording process and breaks down each song on Side A of the record. Oh, and you get to hear my nerdy voice introduce the whole thing.

Call it controversial or just call it "synergy" but I did toil with the decision to release a podcast clearly promoting a record that my label, yk records released. It could be considered a conflict of interest - or just self-serving - but I don't think anyone is going to mind.

Anywho, many thanks to Ryan Ervin for hosting the band, Jeremy Ferguson for lending his studio Battle Tapes to record it and to the band for indulging my interest in such a discussion.
