Friday Videos - Jan 13th, 2017

posted January 13, 2017 #

In case you missed it, Little Bandit is now officially part of the yk Records family. We'll be releasing music from the album in the coming weeks but look at that vinyl! You know you want some beautiful pink vinyl in your collection, right?

Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't remind you (ad naseum) about this event I am putting on in Nashville on Feb 10th. Come out and see nine bands from the roster do their thing. It will be great. If you want more, get to know Peeqo, the GIF bot. The video isn't enthralling but the concept of a little desktop robot that responds to you, visually, with GIF's is kind of great.

Sound Show

posted January 12, 2017 #

While I've been enjoying reading The Outline, I've really been enjoying their podcast Sound Show. Each episode takes on a curious subject - Audio Illusions, the THX Deep Note, The Music Genome Project - but none have yet to exceed the 30 minute mark, so it's not a daunting listen. Definitely one worth adding to your subscriptions.

I couldn't find a singular homepage to showcase the offering but it's on iTunes and Overcast - what else do you need?

ReplyAll, Looking Forward

If you haven't listened to the ReplyAll wrap-up episode, Past, Present, Future, take some time today to listen to the last ten minutes - a catchup piece on a 2015 episode about the Guatemalan government entitled Quit Already. Hosts PJ and Alex reach out to Lucia, the Guatemalan who organized a political movement by accident to find out how things are going in her country and her life. The parallels they draw with the US seem quite apt but Lucia manages to keep a shiningly optimistic view. It's a nice bit of perspective.

A Night Of: yk Records

posted January 11, 2017 #

If you've been paying attention, you may have noticed that Skyway Man and Little Bandit are releasing their respective records on the same day, February 10th. What better way to celebrate this than by having a double record release show? How about an entire night of yk Records artists.

I'm happy to present A Night Of: yk Records. It's nine bands, all from the roster playing across two stages. If you're in Nashville around Feb 10th, please come out. If you're not in Nashville, consider making the trek; it's going to be great.

The Hidden Art of Leo Bates

posted January 11, 2017 #

I'm fascinated by artists that spend a lifetime creating but not sharing that work with the world. It's the antithesis of Austin Kleon's mantra, "Show Your Work." Photographer Vivian Maier and fine artist Henry Darger are the top two examples that come to mind. If you don't know them, do a deep dive.

Thanks to Matt Glassmeyer I've now became aware of Leo Bates, a Brooklyn artist from the 70's that spent decades creating mountains of work but never letting it leave his studio space. This NY Times piece on him is an excellent starting point for learning his history and reasoning behind never sharing. Much of it is speculation, as he died in 2013.

In the end, the process of creation probably is more important than the sharing of a particular work but the Internet has made that headspace almost unfathomable.

The Advice King

posted January 11, 2017 #

Chris Crofton is a musician turned comedian that regularly contributes a column to the Nashville Scene called Advice King in which he gives absurd-yet-not-inaccurate feedback to ridiculous questions. Now he's taken that Advice King to the YouTube realm with this video installment. Unsurprisingly, it works quite well. Hopefully there's more of these lurking in the future.

Announcing Little Bandit

posted January 10, 2017 #

Happy to welcome Little Bandit to the yk records roster. His debut full-length album, Breakfast Alone, will be released on February 10th, 2017 and is available for pre-order now.

I'm holding off on posting any actual music from the album just yet as there is a possibility of a proper premiere around the corner. The record is a proper country album, filled with stories of bad decision making, heartache and odes to alcohol. If you're the type willing to roll the dice, order the limited edition pink vinyl now... otherwise, stay tuned for greatness in the near future.

That Girl Sussi

posted January 10, 2017 #

You know how trends are cyclical? You had grunge rock in the mid-90's and now you hear its influence in great new music? Well, the Club Kids scene from the early 90's seems to be coming back around... and I welcome it. While much of the movement is often associated with KIDS or Michael Alig's horrible decision making, it's also rich with imagination and insanely over-the-top costuming and character creation.

If you're willing to dip your toe in, browse through the offerings of Sussi; a mesmerizing character if ever there was one. After that, watch this VICE coverage on the re-emergence of the scene. The costuming is much more bonkers than it was in the 90's but it's an excellent step-up from the previous iteration.

Chilean UFO Spotted

posted January 10, 2017 #

Take some time to read through this exhaustive post on a Chilean UFO that was recently spotted by the CEFAA (the agency that investigates Unidentified Aerial Phenomena). I realize that believing in random spacecraft from other planets emitting high energy gas into our atmosphere seems like a stretch but it's a fascinating read. And the videos, whatever they are, are equally entrancing.
