Deth P Sun / Hocus Pocus

posted October 5, 2016 #

I am a diehard Deth P Sun fan. There's something about his adventuring cat protaganist haunted by blissed out ghosts amidst an overrun world of crystals and flora and fauna that just gets me. That being said, this Hocus Pocus show at Giant Robot is among my favorite works of his; particularly the top three shown. Absolutely gorgeous.

Spoiler alert: we are NOT unifying this country anytime soon. If you buy into Trump's rhetoric, you don't want to be unified. In any way.

It was really rude of Tim Kaine to repeat things Donald Trump said in front of Mike Pence.

Birdcloud - Singles Only

posted October 4, 2016 #

I've been listening to Birdcloud since their first demo for "Indianer" popped up on MySpace in 2011. I stand by them in their defense of satire and feel proud of them for contributing to Country Music's Irreverent History. And with that, I'm proud to be a part of their mega release for Singles Only; the double record containing all of their previous recorded material and a few new songs.

I've embedded a sampler below but the album is now streaming in full on Apple Music, Google Play and Soundcloud (Spotify soon). However, Birdcloud is best enjoyed on Youtube, where they have recorded live versions of almost every song on the record. I suggest watching them there to get the full experience.

Invisible Creature 2016

posted October 4, 2016 #

Take a moment today to cruise around the freshly relaunched Invisible Creature site. As I am sure you are well aware, they've been absolutely crushing it for years with their enormous body of work but the past few years have shown a new focus on much bigger undertakings. The Cinerama mural, the Odd Galaxy Colonel Stinson toys, the Stack and Scare! sets and Target gift cards are enormously enjoyable works and reach a huge audience. Really happy for these guys and delighted to spend time cruising through the work.

And just in time for Halloween, I gotta pick up one of these guys.

The source code used to program the Apollo 11 rocket has been published on GitHub. As this Quartz article points out, the history behind digitizing the code is a long and sorted tale but, ultimately, the most intriguing part about it all is the time capsule element to it. The code was, of course, written by humans in the 1960's and plenty of amusing method names and in-line comments made their way into the final product. How about a file named BURN_BABY_BURN--MASTER_IGNITION_ROUTINE? Or a comment, in the final stack, that reads TEMPORARY, I HOPE HOPE HOPE?

It goes to show, leaving amusing comments in your source code is not only beneficial to other programmers but might also end up being a time capsule into the era you wrote it.

Debuting One Million One Million One Million

posted October 3, 2016 #

For the past 12 years I've been a diehard fan of the band Apollo Up!. Several of the members went on to form Tower Defense (which I also greatly enjoy) and frontman Jay Leo Phillips has been involved in a number of other enjoyable undertakings - Forget Cassettes, Trail of Dead and CHARGES to name a few. But he's always a collaborator, until now.

The debut solo release from Jay Leo Phillips is entitled One Million, One Million, One Million and will be released on my own yk records this month. In fact, Oct 12th is the official debut date.

Listen to the first track - (Do The) 20th Century over on the Nashville Cream for the first taste of his new endeavor. Oh, and then go order the record.

The Talkhouse Podcasts

I can't recall how I stumbled on it but I've been diving into the archives of The Talkhouse podcast - a lengthy repository of interviews between artists. Kathleen Hanna and Meredith Graves? Check. Kevin Drew and Julia Holter? Yep. Alex Winter with Henry Rollins!? Surprisingly, yes.

There's plenty of great stuff on the Film side as well - Darren Aronofsky with Laurie Anderson or Kumail Nanjiani with Michael Showalter for example. Fire up your favorite podcast app and search for `The Talkhouse.`
