The Michael Shelley archive over at WFMU is deep. Sixteen years of radio shows is no small feat. Oh, and each show detail page has a bevy of interesting links to go along with it. Intense and impressive to say the least.
As I continue to dive into various Vaporwave songs, I'm curious where the plethora of samples originate from. Fortunately, this series does a great job of running through a ton of songs and playing back their original bits. I'd love to hear this for a single song rather than jumping around so much but I'll take what I can get!
Chad opened up my ears to this phenomenal Sonosolar mixtape over the weekend and I'm passing the treat along to you. The thirty minute compilation features an excellent mixture of psychedelic caribbean songs and latin "sonorous experiments."
Take a solid ten minutes today and read this Robin Chase (CEO ZipCars) penned piece, Self-Driving Cars Will Improve Our Cities. If They Don't Ruin Them. It's not a short read but she covers a lot of ground - from the potential impact on the economy, unemployment rates, congestion and the hardest part, changing the American mindset to not place Car Ownership on the same pedestal it is today. Are Self-Driving Cars and a Universal Basic Income related? She certainly makes a compelling case for it.
Absolutely an essential read to consider all the moving parts that get affected by no longer needing to drive yourself around.
Thanks to my brother, I was rather immersed in the world of The Monkees in my youth. I'm a fan of all the early albums and even managed to see a midnight showing of their bizarre movie Head. They're often a bit shat upon in the cultural zeitgeist but they really do have a quality catalog of songs. I could listen to this or this on repeat for days.
That being said, seeing that they had a new album was a bit shocking. They've been around for 50 years now and frontman Davy Jones died in 2012. But, if death didn't stop the Beatles from releasing new music, why should it stop The Monkees?
Fun facts about this record beyond the posthumous Jones appearance. 1) The title track, "Good Times" features Harry Nilsson on duet vocals (also dead) and was a demo from the 1960's that was started with Monkee Michael Nesmith and never finished until now. 2) Fountains of Wayne Adam Schlesinger produced it. 3) Rivers Cuomo wrote the latest single. 4) Andy Patridge of XTC worked on the record, a real treat given that he's mostly left pop music behind.
The most surprising thing about the album isn't that it exists but that they managed to make it a good listen.
Made for shopcoyotenegro.com SONOSOLAR is a ride around Piñones, Puerto Rico on acid, where old caribbean rhythms and new sonorous experiments are combined to evoke a journey through lost beaches and tropical galaxies.

If you're looking for somewhat disgusting but oddly entertaining visuals for your day, head over to Trimp, a tumblog of the best & worst variety or watch this video. They're unrelated but equally disturbing.
