Friday Videos - August 12th, 2016

posted August 12, 2016 #

Biggest news this week, the release of Uncle Skeleton's new record Cocoa Beach. You can hear it anywhere music is available - Spotify, on vinyl if that's your thing.

Oh, and this guy. Forever.
  • DANIELS - Nike Ad - hot on the heels of their full-length movie, Swiss Army Man, comes a Nike commercial that feels sorta normal at first and then takes a deep plunge into weirdness. Just like you'd expect from DANIELS.
  • Chef No. 5 - Mambo No 5 was made for this.
  • Mark Ronson - Feel Right - somehow I'd never seen this video for the Mystikal heavy song. Perfect.
  • Sonic and Mario Cut Scene - this is a slow burn but if you can stand in there, it's weirdness is worth your time.
  • PJ Harvey "The Wheel" (Live) - not really a funny video but I had no idea PJ Harvey could wail on a saxophone. Love it.
  • Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 6 - I just watched what I assume is the finale last night and am floored by how dark they managed to go with this series. Heavy.
  • Orion Beach - an oldie but still a goodie. Perfect for summer.

52hz

The portfolio of Cornelius Dammrich over at zomax.net is an impressive display of nuanced 3D renderings that clearly get more and more realistic as you progress through them. The latest entry - 52hz is mind boggling realistic. Whenever I see creations like this - from a single individual mind you - I have to remind myself that computer graphics when I was growing up looked like this. Not bad but we've certainly come a long way.

NASA HiDyRS-X

posted August 11, 2016 #

NASA has developed a new camera entitled the "HiDyRS-X" that allows them to record "high speed, high dynamic range footage in multiple exposures simultaneously for use in analyzing rocket engine tests." Basically, it's HD-R for solid rocket engine boosters and the results are awesome. They look unreal, probably because they are unreal compared to what our eyes can actually see. You can watch the video test, it's mesmerizing to say the least.

Stranger Things - Art Of The Title

posted August 10, 2016 #

I just finished Stranger Things last night and was not disappointed. I think about nostalgia a lot and how it can haunt our lives but I thought consistent homages were nice; a pleasant nod if you knew the reference and a gateway to plenty of goodness if you did not.

This Art of the Title interview sits down with Michelle Dougherty of Imaginary Forces, the studio responsible for the opening title sequence and they review the creative process, influences they drew from and mistakes they made (complete with video examples). It's pretty fascinating and I do recommend taking a deep dive in.

Oh, and even if you don't care about the title sequence, I highly recommend you go down the page and watch the video of two of the cast members singing the theme song. Perfect.

Super Team Deluxe

posted August 10, 2016 #

The store at Super Team Deluxe offers a handful of badges and custom lapel pins that appeal to the life of a designer - buttons that read "Indoorsy" or trumpet the well known deathly Untitled-1.ai. My personal favorite is the Command Z pin - beautifully done in all respects.

But aside from the store offerings, the site is filled with little details everywhere. When designers speak about "Delightful" work, this is what they mean. Just check out the hovers on the product details! I can't stop hovering! Look at the menu reveal from an inner page! Lovely.

Small Victories

posted August 10, 2016 #

I'm rather intrigued by the tool that Small Victories is offering - a Dropbox powered website that works entirely off the contents of a single folder. There are a bunch of different themes to choose from and they look great. This is just the right balance of website building for folks that understand asset management but don't have any interest in digging into code. It seems much simpler than a Wordpress install and more ownership than a Squarespace or Strikingly (all good services in and of themselves).

Bonus: the Small Victories site has an interesting vibe and a very nice layered effect for all the different sections describing their service.
