It's been three years since a proper Uncle Skeleton release and, personally, I think that's far too long. Granted, the man has been busy moving to NY, getting married and creating wonderful musical worlds over at Dots but I still felt a deficit in my life not having creations under the Uncle Skeleton moniker. So, without further ado, I'm happy to announce Cocoa Beach is now available.
The vinyl version is up for pre-order but you can stream the whole thing here, here and on your favorite streaming service sometime later today. Here's a handy sampler to whet your whistle.
I'm really happy with how the artwork turned out - clean, simple and with a mild 60's vibe. Just right for an Uncle Skeleton release if I do say so myself. It's a beautiful record filled with moments I could go on and on about - the drum fill of "Cocoa Nibs", the whispering sweetness the ends Sasask, the tropicalia vibe of Pet Island III and the epic Spiritualized-esque greatness of Handy Looky. That's just a few off the top of my head.
I think highly of all the releases on yk records but Uncle Skeleton helped start the entire label, so I have a special affinity for everything he puts out into the world. This is a gem. Enjoy it.

Ask a bunch of talented artists and illustrators to visualize one of their favorite lyrics as a tattoo and you get Permanent Records; a repository of potential ink from the likes of Richard Perez, Meg Lewis and Keith Davis Young, to name but a few.
Not only is a nice place to feel inspired by different illustration styles, it's not a half bad spot to hear some new music you may enjoy.
If you are familiar with the Vaporwave genre, you are undoubtedly familiar with Macintosh Plus's album Floral Shoppe. Given that the song Lisa Frank 420 / Modern Computing has over 10 million views on Youtube, it's possible that you've encountered it before.
Mark AtScratch has taken the album to the next logical step and created a full-on, hour-long, VHS homage to it. I would tend to steer away from something like this but the imagery used is not the typical movies and kid's commercials that you usually encounter. This is lo-fi animation from the 80's at its finest and it's a beautiful matchup to the album.
Interesting read from Clay Shirky entitled There's No Such Thing as a Protest Vote. I don't entirely agree with his take on third parties but I can't argue with the notion that voting against someone is a meaningless gesture. These two quotes in particular spoke to me:
The system is set up so that every choice other than 'R' or 'D' boils down to "I defer to the judgement of my fellow citizens." It's easy to argue that our system shouldn't work like that. It's impossible to argue it doesn't work like that.
...
Citizens who vote for third-party candidates, write-in candidates, or nobody aren't voting their conscience, they are voting their ego, unable to accept that a system they find personally disheartening actually applies to them.
I can certainly see the article stirring some conversation but I enjoy the sentiment that voting against a candidate is missing the point (for me).
