I have long been a fan of the work of
Aaron Robbs so I was quite pleased to see these
poster graffiti pieces start sprouting up on his Instagram. It's just basic noodling around but it's right up my alley and a pleasant divergence from much of his recent work (also enjoyable).
tldr: these look nice.

Great to see
Adia Victoria (and her band) making their network television debut on Colbert last night. You can see the performance of "Dead Eyes" right
here and I highly suggest you muster the patience to get through the (admittedly long) intro of solo singing. It's the perfect balance to the firey performance that comes after.
Oh, and keep an eye on that keyboard player, Alex Caress, you'll hear
more from him later I feel confident.

Really enjoyed
this piece on the resilience of text. It was inspired by a
grandiose statement made by higher ups at Facebook regarding the death of text and the rise of video ( all video... all the time ) and the reply could not be more eloquent and perfectly pointed.
Text is surprisingly resilient. It's cheap, it's flexible, it's discreet. Human brains process it absurdly well considering there's nothing really built-in for it. Plenty of people can deal with text better than they can spoken language, whether as a matter of preference or necessity. And it's endlessly computable -- you can search it, code it. You can use text to make it do other things.
There's certainly advantages to documenting our world
with video but it's hard to argue with the idea that text is a more flexible and robust tool.
tl;dr: great read.

Really enjoyed this Bandcamp piece on
The Cottage Industry of Indie Game Soundtracks, wherein they speak with a number of different videogame composers -
Jim Guthrie,
Disasterpiece,
Chipzel, et. al. - and get their perspective on creating music for games and the, often, surprise success that comes with it.
It's interesting to see
Makeup and Vanity Set dive into that world with
Brigador because it's both an odd pairing and a completely sensible one. On the one hand I'd say his music is best paired with films but a videogame
is often a film in its own way - there's a narrative, there's a tone and there's a protaganist making his way through a hardship. Now I'm just curious to see how well it works in a VR environment... I bet I'd be scared to death.

The sadly scathing political commentary in the form of ridiculous videogame will likely erk some people but
Thoughts & Prayers: The Game properly captures my sentiment on our current political scenario. For me, the most important thing to remember is you can't win.

It's been a
few years since I wrote about the work of
Cosmio Galluzzi and his penchant for ancient dystopian sci-fi worlds has only gotten better. It's really no surprise that he is part of the
Hyper Light Drifter team,
Heart Machine. His work and the vibe of that world pair perfectly. Please take a moment to peruse his blog, the landscape work is absolutely gorgeous.

Fun fact: I'm home alone this weekend and plan to tear through a bunch of lingering freelance projects. That's right, when left to my own devices I decide to just work more. Super fun lifestyle,
right? Let's hope this bears fruit for everyone in the near future. On to the distractions!
I've also been diving into
this archive of ridiculousness and
this repository of misleading thumbnails and have been quite entertained.
Oh, and as a heavy handed reminder, scrounge up whatever pennies you can find this weekend and find a way to donate to
Everytown. I'd love to not have another weekend filled with tragic gun violence news and the only way that's going to happen is by fueling an advocacy group with enough money that they can be a legit heavyweight in this absurd Second Amendment political bru-hah-hah we've been having.

If you are in the Nashville area this weekend, please steer yourself towards
The High Watt on Friday night (June 17th) for the
Nightblonde record release show.
Numbers has been officially available for two weeks now, available on
YouTube,
Spotify,
Soundcloud,
Apple Music, et. al. and, of course,
limited edition vinyl. The band has quite the blowout planned for the evening and if you can see it, you should.
If you
aren't in the area, just go stream the album a few times or
buy the record. You'll thank yourself for it.

Previously, I mentioned the
Club 9 video from Nicolas Godin and Iracema Trevisan. What I failed to mention is that the video was also a collaborative work with illustrator
Fernando Leal. His geometric work is often
playful and morbid, a winning combo if ever there was one and there's an almost mathematically balance he is able to create with pieces like this one
for Audi or this one for the
Pennsylvania Gazette. It's not rigid but it's clearly playing by some internal rules and logic.

I can't quite put my finger on it but there's something alluring about the simplistic work of
Jocelyn Tsaih. I'm sure I'm projecting but the pieces depicting various
clay people have a strange sadness to them. There's plenty of
joyful pieces as well but I find myself drawn to these strangely
haunting pieces.

The last installment of my Nashville music based podcast,
We Own This Town, came out in January. Why did it take me five months to put out another edition? Because it's the
75th episode and I felt like it deserved a little something special. So, after much hemming and hawing, I reached back into my library of Nashville music from the early 2000's era and put together 40 minutes of songs that may be overlooked or forgotten by the current pioneers of the music scene.
So, without further adieu, here is Volume 75 of the podcast. An enjoyable 40 minutes of music that you may have never been exposed to but damn well should be.
- Character - Theme From "Starkweather"
- Duraluxe - Phantom Power
- Forget Cassettes - Bruce Wayne
- Whole Fantastic World - Beets For Bombs
- Hotpipes - A Brain And A Vegetable
- The Features - 33.3
- The Mattoid - Easy Livin’
- Lone Official - Le Coq Sportif
- De Novo Dahl - Be Your Man
