I think we can all agree that Jon Oliver's
Last Week Tonight (and Samantha Bee's
Full Frontal) continues to carry the torch where Jon Stewart and The Daily Show left off. Each episode is chock-full of whipsmart opinions and well researched insights on the corruption and absurdities we often sweep under the rug.
If you have the time (I know 20 minutes is an eternity on the Internet), please watch Oliver's latest piece on
Debt Buyers. Not only because it's an insightful and educational bit on a banking practice you probably didn't know existed but because in watching it, you will witness Oliver
absolve $14.9million dollars in medical debt. His team created their own debt buying company,
CARP, was offered a stockpile of personal debt, purchased it for $60k and then simply absolved it entirely.
I realize that this kind of stunt doesn't fix the system on the whole but I'm blown away by the ease of absolution here. Oliver's charitable actions are stunning. Where's the Kickstarter to start banding together and doing this sort of thing ourselves?

Canadian producer Bwana recently released
Capsule's Pride, a remix album based on
Akira, the iconic 1988 anime. You can listen to the whole thing
on Youtube or just check out the first track embedded below.
But, moreso, you really should check out the
site for the album. It's a long scroller that utilizes
Akira artwork and simple animations to pay tribute to the action and tension of the film. It's a prime example of the power in keeping it simple for a big impact.

Turntable Kitchen has a rather ambitious (and very dot-com-y) goal; to pair great music and food through their
Pairings Box; a combination of vinyl and cooking ingredients delivered straight to your door.
But they recently launched a Kickstarter campaign that seems a bit more appealing for my own personal taste. The
Vinyl Covers Project is a proposed subscription service in which you receive a full-length cover album from a particular artist. Not a compilation of artists covering one song each. Not a 7" featuring one song. An entire record covered start to finish in whatever new style the artist chooses. There's lots of potential there for some interesting pairings and clashing styles. I'm curious to see where it leads.

There's only a teaser for it at the moment but I'm excited to see more animations from
Bandit Bird, an undertaking from
Jayr Sotelo. There's an excellent Spaghetti Western meets 50's Action Montage vibe to the intro and I hope that vibe continues into the full fledged episodes.

I am sure I will endorse a full deep-dive into the portfolio of
Franck Bohbot but, for now, I'm suggesting you indulge in the collection of portraits entitled
I Am An Actor which captures excellent moody images of various actors at their day jobs or non-acting environments. There's an intense moodiness to many of the images lighting that feels otherworldly.

Quite intrigued by the
Kickstarter offering from
Imageflow, a proposed web server utility that handles image resizing and security. On the top level surface, it's very similar in functionality to what ImageMagick and imgix are already doing but with a more focused effort on keeping information secure and serving optimized resources for mobile devices. On the whole, it's a nerdy offering but the pitch is quite sound if you're the type of person concerned with serving front-end assets and keeping your server secure.
