German artist Pierre Schmidt, aka Dromsjel, has a serious penchant for combining collage and illustration in a manner that skirts the line between stunning beauty and unnerving nightmare. The pieces often feature some floral arrangement that may be melting down or devouring some vintage looking, washed out, innocent couple. The older work is even more chaotic, so I suggest doing a deep dive into the portfolio.

Uptown Sans

Joshua Mauldin's Uptown Sans is typeface inspired by the likes of Jim Flora, Saul Bass and Eric Carle, masters of 50's and 60's design. Moreso, it's "Charlotte-inspired" - which is not a phrase I read about too often in regards to a typeface. I love the idea of cities and spaces inspiring type to help embody the spirit of the city.

Even if you don't have use for the type at the moment, peruse the site for some delightful illustrations.

Polkanoid

Katherine Zymla and Emmanuel Francoise are Polka and Noid - "lovers and parents of 3." They're also French photographers with a love of the polaroid that share their work together as Polkanoid. The Polaroid aesthetic adds a beauty to any image but these two are clearly not leaning on the gimmick to create wonderful images, the format just augments their inherent ability. Check out Polka's Mother series or Noid's Portraits for some obvious examples of this.

I can't believe I've never looked up the collected works of Leif Podhajsky before now. He's responsible for creating an unbelievable amount of memorable artwork - to name a few, Mount Kimbie, Shabazz Palaces, Kelis and just about everything Tame Impala has released. There's also plenty of publication art, amazing glitch experimentation and gorgeous fine art.

It's a whole lot to take in but it's incredibly inspiring. Not to oversell it or anything but I could easily make the argument that he's stepping into the modern day shoes of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis.. but I don't want to oversell it. Just enjoy.

Through the work of Ben Frost I stumbled upon the online store Stupid Krap, selling various prints, art and pins from various contemporary and graffiti artists. These Simpsons + Sesame Street mashups from Jeroen Huijbregts and this Smoking Cat Lapel from Buttons are worth the clickthrough alone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love this enamel pin resurgence that has been happening lately. As overwhelming as it may be, it creates a low barrier for entry to show appreciate for the smallest of artists.

I took my annual pilgrimage to the NYC Easter Parade yesterday and encountered a cavalcade of characters and wonderful hats. I also managed to stumble upon the documentation of the event from photojournalist Maite Mateo, who happened to capture the craziness of the event perfectly.

Her portfolio of official photography is intriguing but has a much more serious tone to it. Documenting the Sandy aftermath or living under a bridge is important work but I willfully embrace the lighter side of work shown on her Instagram.
