Friday Videos - March 25th, 2016

I'm giving myself a quick trip to Nashville this weekend to partake in the release shows for Tower Defense and POLY. If you'd like to see me, come to The 5 Spot or Club Roar, respectively. I'm very happy to help these bands release their great music into the world and hope others enjoy it as well.

On to the distractions!
  • Bunny Eats Berries - there is something magnificently horrifying about this, as innocent as it is.
  • Sanders Scares Trump - excellent editing skills here.
  • History - of course I'm going to push more Tower Defense on you! If you haven't seen this video yet, enjoy.
  • Black Cat - and a reminder to enjoy POLY.
  • A Prank Time - this is maybe too weird for sharing but I was entranced by every single second of the 4 minute runtime.
  • Ukulele Batman vs Bagpipe Superman - the Internet is a weird, weird place. The video is funny but imagining these bozo's filming it is even more absurd.
  • Sophia the Robot - nightmare fuel. This is the epitome of the Uncanny Valley.
  • Vangoffey - Trials of a Modern Man - I was (and am) a diehard Supergrass fan. I've been enjoying the solo works of frontman Gaz Coombes but am super pleased to see that the other members are continuing on making music and, in the case of Vangoffey, it sounds a whole lot like Supergrass.
  • Clown Trailer - I'm not much of an Eli Roth fan but this trailer for his new movie really feels like a total parody. It's actually based on a parody trailer but doesn't look like he did much more with it. Very strange. via Lee.
  • False Colors "Portrait in Smoke" - something about this video entrances me. I can't imagine the editing process but it's 100% mesmerizing.
  • Guy Pearce "Fly All the Way" - did you know Guy Pearce made music? Did you know he made an absurd music video promote it and it has less than 12,000 views? The weirdest part? The song itself isn't half bad! via Paul.
I also recommend enjoying this little surprise.

Stay Inside Released

As mentioned, two records are officially released on my label today. The second, but no lesser, release is from Tower Defense, entitled Stay Inside. It's an EP of bombastic post-punk inspired rock songs. The band also happens to feature double bass players - husband and wife Mike and Sarah Sheperd - that gives every song an extra oomph of fuzzed out energy. You can listen to the entire EP on your favorite streaming service, in the embed below or over on Bandcamp.
As with most of the releases I work with, this is being unleashed on limited edition, high-quality vinyl with worthwhile packaging. It's a clear green 10" record featuring collage work from Ben Smythe with the same tracks repeated on both sides (a little something I saw Richard Swift do and was happy to emulate). I've been wanting to work with these guys for a long time and am happy to get this out into the world, please go pick one up.

Let's Have an Adventure Release

Today is a big day for my label as two records are being released into the world at the same time. The first is from POLY and it's entitled Let's Have an Adventure. The band gave themselves two rules when making this - only use acoustic instruments and don't use any traditional guitars. They also happen to have a penchant for writing upbeat, cute, fun pop songs. You can listen to the entire record on your preferred streaming service, in the embed below or over on Bandcamp.
As with most of the releases on my label, it's available in limited edition, high-quality vinyl. The packaging features a gold foil imprint and a clear confetti LP. Internet stills and mockups do not do it justice. I am proud to put out records with this level of detail and love so please take a moment to look at the design. Dan Sommers did a wonderful job with the layout and the Lauren Lowen illustration could not be more perfect.

I know very little about this forthcoming Capybara Games release, Below, but I think that's exactly what intrigues me about it. Yes, I have seen the teaser video but even that reveals more than I'd like to know. Their aesthetic and overall vibe is always right up my alley, so I'm just excited to give it a spin this summer.

I've been cruising through the works of Julian Glander lately and find myself fascinated by the adorable style, simple shapes and low polygon count of the whole affair. His reel gives nice insight into the overall vibe of the work but I highly suggest diving into the Tumblog so you don't miss out on gems like this Waffle Guy or morphing pup.

Nielsen TUT

I've always been baffled by Nielsen ratings because I could never understand how a small sampling of homes with their special set-top box could possibly properly reflect the viewing habits of homes across the country. Sure, it could be a broad survey of behavior but large sums of money for commercial rates are determined by their percentages. The life and death of a particular show can hinge on the viewer numbers that come from Nielsen. Fortunately, it looks like they're finally trying to join us in the 21st Century.

It will be a few more months but the Nielsen folks have announced a new metric called Total Use of Television (TUT) that gathers data from connected TV's. It seems that this will be a more accurate view of what people are actually watching but still a best guess scenario.

I'm curious if there's a world in which there could be a standard reporting API for any network to report data to. An open-source, large data-store, ratings repository if you will. This would allow smaller publishers to get their due and create a more accurate take on user behavior. Admittedly, it'd be a helluva lot of data to crunch but I'm sure someone is up to the challenge.
