Friday Videos - Feb 19th, 2016

posted February 19, 2016 #

The big news in my world this week was the announcement of both the Tower Defense EP and POLY full-length. I'm excited for both of them, largely because of their sonic differences. I'm still playing the guessing game when it comes to getting these bands the exposure they deserve but I'm confident that they are great to listen to and that's the most important part.

On to the distractions. Use them wisely and frequently.
  • Every Best VFX Effects Winner. Ever. - phenomenal montage of every Oscar winner since the beginning in 1927. I dunno why but I'm particularly smitten with just about everything pre-1985. via Chad.
  • Armi Ja Danny - I Want to Love You Tender - it's been awhile since I posted an amazing vintage choreographed dance number. Feels good to have this back in my life.
  • Fun Town Auto - very vulgar, very NSFW clip that I think about pretty regularly. I find myself wanting to quote it but know that no one would get it. I still love it.
  • Stray Day: Episode 4 - Dean Fleischer-Camp consistently pumps out weirdly amusing videos, this is no exception.
  • Steve Jobs on 'Think Different' - a 1997 talk from Jobs upon his return to Apple. This has been making the rounds lately and I've been meaning to make time to watch it, heard it was good. via Kevin.
  • Apollo 100 - Jazz Pizzicato - not exactly a compelling video but what a downright delightful song.
  • Connan Mockasin - Forever Dolphin Love - I won't lie, I've been browsing weird music videos lately and this one ranked way up there. Clocking in at 10 minutes, it's a real endurance challenge. I made it four and a half minutes, you?

Follower

The concept behind Follower is sure to ruffle a few feathers. You sign up on the site to be followed and if your application is accepted, you receive a link to an app that will let you know on what day you will be trailed. Yes, you volunteer to be stalked, temporarily.

To be fair, it's an art project from Lauren McCarthy, so there's a bit of tongue and cheek to it. Just watching the introductory video raises an eyebrow or two - do people think this way? Is this how the majority of us exist? Silo'ed into ourselves but wanting to share our behaviors, anonymously? Doesn't the Observer Effect come into play that alters the followee's behaviors?

All those questions are probably exactly the point of the whole thing. And, to be totally honest, I'd absolutely do it.

Abandoned Nashville

posted February 19, 2016 #

I've always been a fan of photography that documents abandoned structures and neglected buildings. There's a creepy stillness to the images - particularly when the spaces weren't even cleaned out before the residents departure. Couple that enjoyment with a focus on locations around the Nashville area and you've got yourself a real winner. The Abandoned Nashville stream hits on all those notes - creepy, empty spaces and lost architecture from my true home. Certainly worth a follow.

From Poly's upcoming release "Let's Have an Adventure", out March 26th on YK Records and Polyversal Records! Release party March 26th at Club Roar!

yk032: Poly - Let's Have an Adventure

posted February 18, 2016 #

Extremely excited to announce that yk records will be releasing the full-length album from POLY, a Nashville trio that is on a quest to write fun, delightful songs entirely with acoustic instrumentation and never a guitar. Let's Have an Adventure has been pressed into an explosive clear confetti vinyl 12" inside of a gold embellished jacket. It's a real beauty.
You can listen to Fishin' right now to get a sense of the carefree vibe the band embodies and then go pre-order that record! It will be widely available on March 26th, 2016.

Personal note: one thing I love about running this label is the variety of music I get to work with and help bring into the world. POLY is a far cry from the recently announced Tower Defense EP but that's the appeal for me - the range of goodness that these musicians have to offer.
