You know the name Boston Dynamics? Sure you do! They're the folks responsible for this robotic nightmare and this somewhat-less-terrifying robot jogger. All and all, they're doing an intense bit of R&D on robotics - the type we think about in sci-fi dystopian futures but also the kind we think about when we say the word "Robot" in general.

Gizmodo has a nice run down on their latest creation ATLAS. The creature can walk indoors and outdoors, pick up boxes, get pushed around and even pick itself off the floor. While there's plenty of hilarious commentary to be made regarding the forthcoming robot wars (why is that human shoving the robot?!?), this is intensely impressive tech. Watch this video to get a proper understanding of everything ATLAS is capable of.

I can't help but think of this whenever Boston Dynamics is mentioned - the Makeup and Vanity Set pairing is the perfect matchup.

The MTA Delay Problem

I fear this is only interesting to people who have to deal with the NYC Metro Transit Authority but I loved this piece on The MTA Delay Problem. Basically it sheds some light on why a 100-year old subway system is struggling to upgrade, how it deals with the quick decision of fixing an immediate delay problem and what they plan to do in the long term. That's all very New York specific but I've a feeling that if you're curious about city infrastructure, it will be interesting. The article itself is covering specific woes for old trains but I can immediately see the parallel with the broken bus system in Nashville. All and all, public transportation ain't easy.

There's no argument that our society has a prison problem. It's a deep and complex issue but, at the end of the day, too many people are in prison. Additively, are the right people in prison? Well, the The Captured Project asked the same question. In fact, they asked it to a bunch of inmates and then requested that they draw or paint those they felt should be imprisoned.

Make no mistake, this is commentary on White Collar crime - and how business leaders get away with more simply because of their power and monetary positions*. At the end of the day, there's a sadness to having prisoners make art about individuals that they feel did as bad as they did and even sadder that we don't necessarily recognize them as being right.

I don't believe it's a black and white issue that the President of a company is always to be held accountable for the activities of his megabeast but it's an art project.

The Secret Lives Of Tumblr Teens

I caught wind of this Elspeth Reeve article, The Secret Lives of Tumblr Teens, last week when Andy posted about it but hadn't actually had a chance to read it until recently. I would have recommended it based off the GIF art header alone but it's so much better than just a pretty presentation. I can't properly express what makes the article so fascinating - it investigates the practical usage of Tumblr, how it helps teens express themselves, why the anonymity of it is a healthy aspect and even ways teens have gamed the system to make it profitable in a few cases. But there's an emotional underpinning to it all that you just need to read to understand.

The U.S. Has Gone F&*%ing Mad

Absolutely loved this James Allworth article, The U.S. has Gone F&*%ing Mad. As an Australian, he has experienced first hand what it's like to have a gun problem and tackle it head on. The article itself is a heated tear down of the events that have been transpiring over the US in the past year but the problem, culminating in the latest FBI debacle and headbutting with Apple. Unfortunately, the problem has existed for far longer than just the past year, it's just that we're finally starting to pay a little attention.

I understand that gun issues are a hot topic. I grew up with guns around my house, I understand gun safety but that doesn't mean I understand current Gun Culture one bit. I'm hoping the rest of the world can have a small bit of the outrage that the U.S. should be having to help us fix this problem.

The Witch

I don't consider myself a horror movie fan to any degree. I enjoy a psychological thriller, or a paranormal exploration, or just general investigation of the the unknown. So, I went in to see The Witch with a bit of hesitation. Fortunately, A24 has been doing an incredible job of distributing excellent movies and the reviews for the movie were all exceedingly positive. Many herald it as "the new It Follows" - which I loved.

Now having seen it, I can easily say that my concerns were empty. It's not a "horror" film, it's a straightforward period piece. The trailer does an excellent job of setting things up without revealing anything. The slow build of the film completely accentuates the mystery of the story. It's shot beautifully and it's creepy as hell.

Long story short, go see this.

Every morning when I ride the train I see a slew of ads both in and around the train. One such campaign that's caught my eye lately is this campaign from Jeremyville for Lyft. You can see more of it here, here, here or here. I don't know where you can view the entire campaign but it's worth seeking out.

Huffduffer

According to this tweet from Austin, huffDuffer solves the request for "Instapaper for MP3s." The name is a bit odd and the site is a bit strangely laid out but the concept is great.
1. Find links to audio files on the Web.
2. Huffduff the links - add them to your podcast.
Pretty simple but seems like a whole lot of potential for making it easy to catch up with a backlog of audio at your leisure.
