Everyone has their favourite David Bowie musical era. For me, it was when he teamed up with Brian Eno in 1977 to create "The Berlin Trilogy” of albums – Low, Heroes, and Lodger – followed by his hyper pop work with Nile Rodgers on Let’s Dance. He was one of my ultimate synth heroes; a star who revelled in creating everything from ambient electronic soundscapes and chart topping synth pop, to IDB and brutal industrial music. I created this mix to celebrate his massive contribution to electronic music, which was broadcasted live on NTS last night as a tribute to the great man. Back in 2014, the Codaphonic double EP - Oh Radio! and Mindwrecker - was released on the world via my own yk records. If you missed it, please take a moment to watch the official video for the title track off Oh Radio!, it's an awesome animated piece of work from Cody Newman himself and Elizabeth Williams.

Gieves Anderson is a talented guy. His musical undertaking, Feral Hymns, is a personal favorite but he's also a rather accomplished photographer. He recently relaunched his official portfolio and it does a solid job of showcasing his diverse abilities. From people's homes to beautiful still life to abstract painterly works, he's got a good bit of everything and all of it is executed impressively well.

Pretty much everything in the Polly Nor portfolio is NSFW but I'm rather smitten with the style. Sure there's a bit of "obscenity" to it but that doesn't make it any less entertaining. I think one could also draw some deeper meaning from the depictions of devil's and sexual acts and the masks we all wear but I won't devolve into any sort of art critique mode; just enjoy!

I tend to steer away from politics around here because they are so polarizing and, honestly, not worth the distress and unclenching debate they typically bring about. That being said, I was really moved by last night's State of the Union address. I implore you to watch the whole thing but if that's too much of a time investment please watch the summary or read it. President Obama runs through four key points of what he foresees for the future of America in general, not just his time in Office. His final point really hits hard to me:

The future we want - opportunity and security for our families; a rising standard of living and a sustainable, peaceful planet for our kids - all that is within our reach. But it will only happen if we work together. It will only happen if we can have rational, constructive debates.

It will only happen if we fix our politics.

He goes on to discuss the notion of civil debate, something that seems to have been falling away the past few years. Facebook, Twitter and Internet in general makes it so easy to find your camp and just stick with them. As Sean Blanda points out, The "Other Side" is Not Dumb.

Obama is, undoubtedly, an excellent orator but I think his message goes beyond just being a good speaker. There seems to be a real opportunity here to become a smarter, well-tempered, intelligent community as a whole. We just have to make the collective choice to actually do it instead of falling for the tricks of media and political grandstanding. I don't think it will be easy but I think the Alternative is way scarier.

nice read and tribute to the man

It's been years since I did a deep dive on the work of Seattle-born, LA-residing Cleon Peterson. His work always struck me as gleefully chaotic and it's only intensified over the years. There's certainly some overt social commentary in the work mixed along with demonic beasts battling for power. It still lands a bit on the side of Disturbing but the style itself has certainly improved over the years.

There was a time when all the worlds ridiculous videos weren't available for instant viewing on Youtube. Fortunately, people like Derrick Beckles spent their time collecting, curating and compiling the craziest bits of TV, movies, random VHS and ephemera into collections for all to enjoy. It was called TV Carnage and it hasn't lost any of its luster. Every compilation is now available on VHX and I can't recommend them enough.

I'm most personally familiar with A Sore for Sighted Eyes, A Rich Tradition of Magic and When Television Attacks but I can't imagine they aren't all wonderfully weird collections.

Many thanks to Giles for steering me towards the work of Hal Hefner and his Consume series - an updated take on John Carpenter's 80's classic THEY LIVE. The six part series depicts plenty of contemporary authority figures in the alien manner Carpenter made famous.

It's not really a re-imagining or adding to the message of the original movie but it does a good job of capturing the style and spirit behind the film.

They may, ultimately, end up being small blips on the Internet radar but I've found myself immersed in two new social-ish networks that are somewhat entertaining.

• Peach - a somewhat traditional social network from the folks that created Vine that relies on "magic words" to post content. Type "Gif" and you can post from Giphy. Type "weather" and it will post the current weather. "Music" yields what you're currently listening to.
  
  I don't really see that being enough of a differentiation from Twitter or Facebook or Instagram to make it seriously sticky, but it's always interesting to see new UI's and interact with friends without an existing pretense. The Peach slate is clean, so you can treat it however you'd like.. which I rather enjoy.
• Stolen - thanks to Tracy Moore I was able to get an invite code into Stolen - a gamified world where you buy and sell Twitter profiles. It's all based on who you follow on Twitter and their net worth is determined.. who knows how? I am guessing market demand + number of followers.
  
  My twitter profile is currently owned by this guy and valued at 142,612 Credits. I've no idea who he is (seems pleasant enough) and I assume he has no idea who I am. It's a rather random game but oddly fun as well. Maybe this is what the Pokemon card craze was like... gotta catch em all!
  
  Update: after less than two weeks, it's over. They caught some major flack for the language in the app (namely: You Own ______ Person) and decided to shut them down. Another bites the dust.
