YKR 2015: Forget Cassettes - Beth Demos, Vol I

posted December 31, 2015 #

I have known Beth Cameron - aka Forget Cassettes for twenty years. I've followed her musical endeavors from high school to the first Forget Cassettes performance at IndieNet and through the release of O Cursa, her previously released album on YK Records. So, when she offered to release a series of exclusive cassettes containing demo's of creations through the years, I jumped at the chance.
I've not released a cassette before but I certainly understand the appeal. From a financial standpoint, it's an easy undertaking. From a collectors standpoint, it's an interesting relic from an enjoyable band. From a fidelity standpoint, it may be questionable but with these particular songs, it works quite well.

Beth's songs have always had a distinct bite to them and I was curious if that would shine through on the demos. It most certainly does - sometimes even more raw than the finished product. I certainly look forward to a Volume 2 and all the albums that come between.

YKR 2015: Sleep Good - Dream Dealer

posted December 30, 2015 #

I'd been a fan of Sleep Good for awhile. His prior release, Skyclimber, caught my ear many years back and I was quite intrigued when I saw Dream Dealer pop up on Bandcamp in January of 2015. The album was phenomenal - a much more mature landscape of psychedelic sound and tripped out explorations than anything that had come before. Surely this had to exist on vinyl, right?
It did not and no plans were in the work to have it exist in such a format. I reached out to Will Patterson - the man behind the project - and asked if we could team up to release it on YK Records. He was game and we began fleshing out the artwork and getting the album into production.

It emerged on vinyl in August - a long time from its original digital release but I am proud to know that I had a hand in getting this record out into the world in a physical form. I've listened to it countless times. It's relaxing and enveloping in a way that feels like a peek into another place.

I hope people continue to discover it as it only becomes more rewarding with every listen. Dive into the video for X as a place to start but, if we're being honest, just put on your headphones and dive in.

YKR 2015: Mystery Twins

posted December 30, 2015 #

Releasing the Mystery Twins 7" for "TV Talk" is something of an extra special treat for me. First and foremost, I love the garage rock styles that Doug Lehmann and Stephanie Brush turn out - they're energetic, memorable, visceral and fun. Granted, that's a lot of feelings to pack into a single song and a cover but they manage to execute on all fronts.
Secondly, the artwork for the record was designed and laser cut by Bryce McCloud of Isle of Printing. Not only does it look great but it's animated. Yes, as you remove the sleeve from the packaging the cut slits animate the imagery. For lack of a better word, it's awesome.

Lastly, Doug is the original creator of We Own This Town - the Nashville music site I curate. He's a smart, talented, funny guy and I'm happy to have had the chance to work with him.

YKR 2015: Makeup and Vanity Set

posted December 29, 2015 #

In April of 2015, YK Records released the double LP album Wilderness from Makeup and Vanity Set. It was a hugely collaborative effort with MAVS, Telefuture Records. Joey Ciccoline and Version Industries. It is a dark musical journey that aids as a supporting character to the short film EIDOLON. It's not a soundtrack but another piece of the puzzle.
I am extremely proud of all the releases I am involved with but feel particularly humbled to be involved with so many great creators - particularly the man behind the music. The album is as beautiful as it is creepy. I've walked home in the dead of night listening to it and felt the presence of some foreboding ghost - despite having listened to the album plenty of times before. It's rare that an electronic record can feel haunting but I truly get that sensation listening to this.

The record did so well that we even did a second pressing, an absolute rarity for YK Records. I suggest getting your hands on it before it sells out (again) as it is an album that will forever be worth listening to.

Steelism - "The Tube"

One of my fave bands here in Nashville. The Scene reported Steelism as ..."the best reason to fire your lead singer". An instrumental band that curates as well as captivates story, color, and emotion with their music! This was recorded at their Christmas release party at The Stone Fox.
