YK 2016: The Road Ahead

Officially, this is my first day of posting on the blog for 2016. I've been writing here for almost fifteen years and still enjoy it. I'm going to make a few resolutions for myself that will hopefully enjoyably impact things around here. In no particular order:

Finish this data migration - I've been leaning on Zapier and custom PHP to power the sidebar of the site. It's working way better than my old cron job RSS reader. Now I just need to migrate all the old blog data into the same table so it's all searchable in one place.
Redesign the site - I want to continue with the dual column layout but have some ideas on how to make it friendlier for smaller screens. I may have to do this in public stages to force myself to get it done.
Share More - I don't post very often to Dribbble but I'd like to force myself to share progress of projects. I'd also like to be better about posting to Twitter a bit more regularly. I'm often just afraid to look / sound like an idiot on both platforms - I suppose I should just embrace the potential.
Renovate YKRecords.com - I need to hone the brand so it properly reads as "YK" and not "YEWKNEE" - this will make Discogs much more sensible and make the name of the label just that much more awkward. I also plan to redesign the site but that parts easy.
Put out a ton of records - YK Records currently sits at 33 releases. I plan to add a ton to that in 2016 and they're all wonderful creations. Part of this undertaking will mean getting some things licensed, so if you have any tips on helping artists get paid for licensing, I'm all ears.

I know I could make this list much longer but if I'm able to accomplish the main points above in the next 3-4 months, I'll be extremely happy.

The Nathan Barley Nightmare Came True

I recently rewatched Nathan Barley - a British series written by Charlie Brooker and Chris Morris from 2005 that follows an idiotic hipster around that manages to always come out on top, despite his horrible decision making. I think about the series quite a bit actually. 90% of the cast has gone on to greater projects, Brooker is responsible for the likes of Black Mirror and Morris appeared regularly on The IT Crowd, Father Ted and Black Books. But despite all that, the show is prophetic and relevant and completely insightful despite being ten years old.

This Guardian article, How the Nathan Barley nightmare came true, covers the subject eloquently and quite in-depthly, even speaking to the creators about the possibility of a second series (no) and what the characters may be up to now (more vapidness).

Combine the lessons of Nathan Barley with those of Idiocracy and I truly believe you've got yourself a map of where we're headed.

Hello Pinboard

tldr: i ditched Delicious for Pinboard and lament waiting this long.

I've been a user of Delicious for many many years. Through their buyout and then their sale and all their aggravating server woes, I stuck with them because they had a ton of my data and I was accustomed to using it. Recently I noticed that their feeds were down and they hadn't posted about it on their blog, their status site or their Twitter. Aggravating as a user to say the least. Irresponsible, neglectful and signs of entropy on their end to say the worst.

So, I finally gave a serious look to Pinboard - a site that has almost 100% the same functionality and 300% more uptime and reliability. However, it costs $11/year, an amount that seemed like enough to drive me away initially. I've come to my senses and am kicking myself for not doing so sooner. It was incredibly easy to import all of my old Delicious bookmarks in a matter of minutes and whatever workflows I had going with Delicious feeds are already working via Pinboard.

Bonus: the Pinboard twitter is caustic and hilarious. I lament waiting so long to ditch Delicious.
