Friday Videos - Sept 4th, 2015

Labor Day is right around the corner. Why not kick off from work early? Maybe you already have. Good on you. Enjoy these videos and partake in the best relaxation you can imagine.
  • Duck Army - caught this via Andy and have watched all too many times.
  • Kanye West Seinfeld - this will likely get pulled soon but this Kanye VMA rant mashed up with Seinfeld is too good.
  • Children's Palace Commercial - where I grew up there was no Children's Palace toy store. Which means there was no Peter Panda in my life. What a travesty. I think this may be the first heavily Northern accented mascot I've encountered.
  • Gunship - "Tech Noir" - a claymation extravaganza featuring 80's classics. Nostalgia fueled for sure but done in such a way that it's original and enjoyable.
  • Why Not Both? - a new life mantra for us all.
  • Happy Fox - a fox wags its tail. Hearts melt.
  • End of An Era: Tokyo's Hotel Okura - a short but great piece on the Hotel Okura, a stunning testament to Japan and modern design. via Jamie
  • Squid Aerobics - just delightful.
  • Chilly - "We Are Pop Kings" - my cab driver last weekend was blasting this song. It was equal parts incredibly weird and enjoyable.

1969 Alphabet Yearbook

A few items of note here. I'd never run across these Photo-Lettering Alphabet Yearbooks before. They are a beautiful repository of typefaces and type treatments stemming from the Photo-Lettering Foundry. Give the 1969 edition a browse, it's great.

More on that, House Industries launched a digital version that allows you to try out all the Photo-Lettering faces and even subscribe to them for licensing them in projects. It's a great history lesson and a useful tool.

All that being said, I make the claim that someone should start up the notion of Typography Yearbooks that compile the best type of the year into a physical book. It would blow up like gangbusters on Kickstarter and serve as a great source of inspiration for generations to come, just like these Photo-Lettering books. So, who wants to make it happen?

Liquid Television

Despite the official site reporting 'Service Unavailable', this article claims that MTV has released the full Liquid Television archives. I'm typically not a huge fan of harping on nostalgia but, if memory serves correctly, Liquid Television was pretty off the wall and progressive for its time. In fact, I'd be willing to wager that it holds up now. Let's hope those servers come back online soon. In the meantime, they actually have new episodes as well - maybe worth a gander?

I told you about the new record from Sleep Good, Dream Dealer, that you can procure on limited edition vinyl but I understand that may not be the format most are looking for music on.

Do you know Mike Post? Maybe not by name but have you ever heard the theme music for The Rockford Files, Hill Street Blues, LA Law, Murder One, NYPD Blue, Hunter, The A-Team, Blossom, CHiPS, Doogie Howser, Quantum Leap, NewsRadio, Magnum P.I. or Law and Order? Well, he worked on all of them (and a ton more). This article does a great job summarizing his life's work and many of the projects he worked on but why not just dive into this playlist filled with his creations. Experience the Riptide theme for the first time and relive the Doogie Howser goodness one more time.

Nicolas Godin, Contrepoint

I've been rather excited for the forthcoming Nicolas Godin album, Contrepoint. He makes up half of AIR and the two videos he's released from the album so far are phenomenal, to say the least. So, it's no surprise that his cover art unveil continues to stoke the flames of my excitement. That's a gorgeous piece of work and I imagine the music within is just as good.
