Stairway to Evan

posted November 5, 2014 #

The second full-length from Evan P Donohue has been out for a few weeks and I've been soaking it in. I was a regular fan of his first release, Rhythm & Amplitude, because of its feel good nature and Elvis Costello inspired styles. I expected much the same from the followup.
However, having really sat with the followup, Stairway to Evan, I've found that there is much more to it. Tracks like "She's Mine, I'm Yours" and "Felix" certainly carry that swagger that I was expecting but much of the rest of the album manages to find a balance between an engaging upbeat groove and just the right melancholy underpinning.

Long story short, I'm a fan and hope this one makes it far and wide outside of just the Nashville area.

Aaron Eiland

Really enjoying the illustration style and portfolio offerings from Aaron Eiland. My only complaint? I wish I could zoom in on these pieces and view them in their full glory. That sticker set of various states is beautiful! Why so small? It's a pithy complaint because the work is so good. Be sure to check out his wide array of business cards and keep up with his latest (and loads of additional inspiration) on his blog,

Dronestagram

posted November 5, 2014 #

From what I've read, Dronestagram was created because there was no central repository for images and videos captured via the more and more accessible consumer drones on the market. I think I'm partial to the video flyovers but there's some pretty unbelievable still photography as well.

It's only a matter of short time before we take this kind of imagery for granted and just assume we've got the entire earth documented from a few yards up.

Montage of Heck

posted November 4, 2014 #

I recently stumbled upon Kurt Cobain's Montage of Heck - a compilation mix that Cobain himself culled from his record collection and would give to friends. I'd never heard of such a thing and found this detailed description of the mix and it's fascinating. Here's the proper description:
"Montage Of Heck" is a collage that Kurt Cobain assembled with a 4-track cassette recorder around 1988. It features sounds from Kurt's extensive and bizarre record collection, manipulated recordings of the radio, elements of Nirvana demos, and sounds created or recorded by Cobain.
The tracklisting is as varied as you can image, from Frank Zappa to Queensryche to children's recordings to John Denver to William Shatner. It's all over the place and is a bit of a trying listen but it's a fascinating tidbit of musical history regardless. Go listen.

Google Calendar

posted November 4, 2014 #

Seems like Google is really cranking out the quality new apps lately. The new Google Calendar looks pretty beautiful - particularly based off of this rather sweet landing page they made to promote it (even with the scrolljacking, I'm into it). The real kicker is that it seems to be for Android phones - a smart move on their part to start moving people more fiercely into their ecosystem. As a friend said to me last night "If you're a Google user, being on Android just makes sense." Seems like that's becoming more of a reality.

Ghostly Ferns

posted November 3, 2014 #

I'm sure this is old news to most but I've been diving into the portfolio of Ghostly Ferns and I'm pretty much smitten with everything I'm seeing. The work for Scouted alone is enough to drop a jaw. So if you're like me and you've managed to miss this, please spend some time with the work.

Smellby On Instagram

posted November 3, 2014 #

I have mentioned her work before but it dawned on me recently that Shelby Rodeffer's Instagram is updated a lot more than her official site - so if you wanna see a bunch of rad hand sign painting and hand lettering, head over there and click that Follow.

Walkway JS

posted November 3, 2014 #

I dunno if you caught this review from Polygon that featured some pretty sweet, vector, animated illustrations but, if you had, you probably thought "awesome! How did they do that!?" But, unlike you, Connor Atherton did something about it. Namely, he created Walkway JS, an animation technique that takes path and line elements and draws them in. It's simple but it's got a nice elegance to it. Consider it adopted for some future, unknown, project.

Make-out With Violence Digital

posted October 31, 2014 #

The TL;DR of this is that MAKE-OUT with VIOLENCE is now available for digital procurement, both in extended special edition form with a load of extras and just the movie if you're into it. To celebrate this occasion, you can use the discount code "WENDY" to get a few dollars knocked off.

The longer version is that I have a long history with this movie. It was produced and shot in a suburb outside of Nashville and many many years ago I was slipped a CD of the unfinished soundtrack and proceeded to play it ad nauseam. It is a wonderful collection of music that I still revisit quite often today.

The movie itself is a "Zombie Love Story" to put it in a nutshell and is quite good. They approach the story from an angle that I'd not seen before, unrequited teen love with the undead but not as a goofy comedy. It has plenty of funny moments but the movie doesn't treat the scenario as complete absurd. It has a wonderful pathos to it.

I'm gushing but everyone involved in this thing is wonderfully talented and it's a great movie. I highly recommend jumping on the discount offered above as it won't last long.

Low Pros + Kidmograph

posted October 31, 2014 #

This Low Pros video for 100 Bottles is astounding. The aesthetic and animations are courtesy of Kidmograph - an artist that manages to blend retro-80's, glitch and videogames into the perfect blend. If I'd seen TRON Legacy and it looked like this, I would have been entirely content. The 80's aesthetic can be overdone but there's an intentional broken-ness to this that really aids it into a new realm.
