The Dream World Of Dion McGregor Revisited

posted June 23, 2014 #

Many years ago, I mentioned the ultra-lucid dreamer Dion McGregor and the recordings that his roommate, Michael Barr, had compiled in the 60's. To the uninitiated, McGregor's soliloquy's during sleeptime seem absolutely unbelievable. And rightfully so! Never before and never since have I heard of someone capable of narrating, completely eloquently, fully realized stories while being entirely asleep.

Thanks to a recent Kickstarter campaign, Torpor Vigil Records has released a new compilations of his dream recordings entitled The Dream World Of Dion McGregor. I'm unable to find a proper sample of it online but you can get the general idea with the example below (from a previous release):

GBA4iOS

I'm perplexed and fascinated with GBA4iOS - a Gameboy emulator for iOS that exists outside the App store and doesn't require any jailbreaking. Somehow changing the date on your device allows these custom plist files to be installed. I'm not sure how that works (hence being perplexed) but I love that someone found a way to open up the full world of emulators and ROM's to iOS devices (hence the fascination).

So, just pair this up with sndtst and you're fully covered in the nostalgia department.

SNDTST

Let the 8-bit musical nostalgia overwhelm you by spending the remainder of your day at SNDTST - a repository for full game soundtracks from our youths (assuming you are slightly the same age as I am). I'm partial to Rygar personally but if you really want something upbeat, hit up Mega Man II.

If there's something missing, hit them up for a specific request.

Loop Ring Chop Drink

Really been enjoying the work of Nicolas Menard lately. If you haven't seen his short film Somewhere, take some time to see it soon. I'm really loving this trailer for Loop Ring Chop Drink, his latest work that is debuting at the Royal College of Art. Fingers crossed the full piece makes its way online.

Canvas: Email Designer

The team at Campaign Monitor just launched Canvas - an absolutely beautiful looking WYSIWYG editor for building out an email. I love the healthy competition between Mailchimp, Emma, Campaign Monitor and others. They're definitely pushing out some really nice looking tools. Be sure to watch the intro video in full to get the full impact.

I do wonder if a novice user would feel intimidated by having so much control over everything but I have a feeling they made it dumbed down enough to work for just about everyone. Very curious to try this out!

Pixel Trek

No matter how busy you are, take a chunk of your day and devote it to Pixel Trek, the 3D isometric exploration of the Enterprise. Yea, that's right, you steer Cmdr Data around and just generally explore the ship. To my knowledge there is no interaction beyond walking around but there's something nice about that. I'm still looking for the Bridge and know it'll be worth it when I get there.
