I would LOVE to see his redesign

I've
previously sung the praises of DKNG's illustration work but this
ICON collection really ups the ante. Fifty illustrated pieces showcasing various pop culture items with a similar palette and style. There are plenty of commonly retread touch points - i.e. Star Wars, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, etc - but I love seeing a few items that are just as common but don't get as much illustration love like Groundhog Day, BIG and Bill and Ted.

The folks over at
Nomad recently relaunched their website and new products - particularly the NomadClip - a carabiner that doubles as a USB cable so you aren't ever caught short handed when needing a charger. I don't think that I would
personally carry any of these things because I'm not out and about that much but damn if they don't look nice!

This repository,
Call to Idea, is a pretty nice gathering of various concepts and ideas all in one place. If you're looking to explore a particular design pattern, this isn't a bad place to start. I've seen plenty of other sites showcasing similar material but they were usually more blog-centric, I like that this is broken down into easy to view categories. It could stand some
fleshing out but it's a nice start.

I recently dove in to an archived episode of
99% Invisible that did some coverage on the
Numbers Station phenomena. Oddly, not much about
UVB-76 but still lots of nice information and examples of the stations themselves.
But the best part of the episode is the introduction and coverage of
You Are Listening To - a website that combines Police Scanner frequencies and ambient music. The combo really works when you set the vocal overlay to
Number Stations and let the ambient music roll underneath. It's an excellent, albeit eerie, listen.

Take some time to read this interview Wes Anderson on his
influence from Stefan Zweig on The Grand Budapest Hotel. The
Austrian was quite popular in the 1920s and 30s and to hear Anderson speak of him - was quite the character. I'm intrigued to read some works from him to see the parallels between the fantastical narrator and the practical loner; an ongoing theme with Anderson.

The function of
Burocratik's Outdated Browser is a familiar one - present your more legacy browser users with a prompt to get their act together and upgrade! I don't exactly agree with the mentality - particularly if you consider that most people that
haven't upgraded probably
can't upgrade (see IT lockdowns or just outdated computers that don't meet requirements to keep up) - but I do think it looks quite nice, as do the
explanation pages. So, there's that at least!

Friday the 13th! Mercury in retrograde! A full moon! Werewolves everywhere! That's the general idea at least. People do tend to get crazy on nights like this so be safe and just stay in and watch this playlist on repeat.
Have a great weekend!

Excellent illustrator and comic book creator
Ian Sampson recently launched a new book -
Up to the Top. I love the style and the contemplative mood of the book. Rather looking forward to receiving my copy.
If that's not your bag you can surely find something of merit on his
blog or
in his portfolio. Lovely work.

Want to be mesmerized, nay, hypnotized by a website? Then steer yourself on over to
God Face, click the text and sit back. Staring directly into the center of the apparatus seems to be the most effective but any presence this has on your computer will surely put you under its spell.

David OReilly recently announced his latest endeavor, a game called
Mountain. Check out this feature list:
- No Controls
- Time Moves Forward
- Nature Expresses Itself
- Things Grow and Things Die
- Once Generated, You Cannot be Regenerated
Yup, that's right. He's created a game in which you play as the Mountain itself - observing the passing of time. There's more info
here but really, what more do you need to know?

The stigma of being
beard guy still lingers strong with me so I try to keep the facial hair related posts to a minimum but when I saw this
Schick ad campaign, I just couldn't resist. Obviously, they're trying to make the point that the giant beard look is akin to having a beast hanging on your face. It's hard to argue with that logic but, honestly, the images are great and I'd personally love to have a beard creature familiar. Sorry Schick.

Pretty interesting read here on
How Amazon Got a Patent on White Background photography. Much like the
War on Terror, the decision came down to a handful of words in the patent application that set it apart from any prior technology.
Much like anything involving the world of patents and technology, it's a frustrating tale of politics and facepalm'ing specifics. But, regardless, it's still interesting.
