The ARS Technica article on Why Youtube Buffers is fascinating... and incredibly nerdy. Over the course of the four page piece it goes into a lot of quite technical detail about different Tier level peers, data centers and, most importantly, the deals made between service providers to keep things running. Turns out there's a lot of manipulation, power trips and backstabbing that ends up throttling user experiences. It's a dense read but it helps to give a better understanding of the tech (and questionable business) happening behind the scenes.

Talking With Hands - The World And Ourselves

Today marks the official release of Talking With Hands debut album, The World and Ourselves. It's available for download or limited edition red vinyl. If you heard the preview tracks you know that it's chalk full of pop goodness. It is, without a doubt, a fine companion for summer.
Funny story about this record: primary songwriter and all around Main Guy behind the band wrote me a cold introductory email back in November of 2011 describing this project and how it fit into the yk records mentality of supporting music that would otherwise never be heard. I loved the demos but hadn't ever worked with an artist residing outside of the Nashville area. Over the course of the next little while, Jeremy Ferguson would give the mixes a solid wrangling, John Baldwin mastered it just right and URP is in the process of printing the vinyl up now.

It's been a slow burn but it's a blast the whole way. Please give it a listen - it's quality explosive pop. Hear it on Rdio, Spotify or Bandcamp.

Summer Mix Series 2013

Maybe it's worn out its welcome or maybe I just haven't talked enough about it but the 2013 Summer Mix Series is going strong. Last night saw the arrival of three new mixes and there was already a lot of goodness to be had. Seriously, dig in there now before it gets too overwhelming. I suspect more is on the way.

Street Art Is

It's just getting it's feet off the ground but Street Art Is looks to be a promising collection of actual found street art from known artists. You can browse by tag or by specific artist - I recommend starting with Faile but diving into other collections as you go.

Even if it never grows beyond this, I'd be happy. Simple interface, easy design and a wealth of content.

Joey Ciccoline 500px

I realize there's not a ton there but the 500px portfolio of Joey Ciccoline is absolutely gorgeous. It's no secret that Mr. Ciccoline is incredibly talented but sometimes it's nice to be reminded. You can see a ton more over on his Flickr but sometimes brevity is beneficial.. as it serves as a good place to start.

UI Kit

UI Kit
I tend to stray from just about any framework that's more intensive than Less Framework but the components of UI Kit look real nice and definitely different from Bootstrap to be worth pursuing. No offense to Bootstrap - it's great - but web homogeny isn't great and variety is the spice of life, no?

Long story short, check this out, could be handy for your next project.

Things have been heating up work but that doesn't mean I don't have a quality playlist of absurdity for you to enjoy.
  • Band Brittanica - an endurance challenge that pays off. Stick with it, you get some great additional gems as you go. Okay, in all honesty, watch the first minute and know you've hit the pinnacle. OR have you?! via Aaron
  • TomCatt - "The Hurt" - another endurance challenge. Less rewarding? I don't think so. Listen to it as if he's singing in a foreign tongue and it's even more rewarding. via Paul.
  • Raccoon Eating Cat Food - yes, the video is about as boring as that title suggest. However, it spawned this GIF so it's not all bad.
  • Los Colognes - "Working Together" - Nashville band Star Wars Disco Cantina Band - if you ever see this record, pick it up and recreate this scene. Keep in mind this is a Funk version of the Star Wars theme... why it's a Western / Flamenco themed dance sequence is beyond comprehension.

Indie Game: The Movie: SE

Did you know that Indie Game: The Movie recently released a Special Edition package of their film? The original movie is the same but now it comes with 100+ hours of additional footage - epilogues, cut scenes, etc. Oh, and even a nice piece on Jason Rohrer and Steph Thirion.

It's available now or, assuming you've already seen the film, you can get just the extra stuff for just $5. Good way to spend the weekend.
