Did you know the folks at Tumblr made an app called Photoset? Its meant to be a place to beautifully display your photos - sort of an ultra streamlined Flickr. It's free and seems like it's pretty well made. I'm not sure where this would "fit" into my app usage but it's worth trying out just for the pretty UI.

Do you read Kill Screen? The videogame arts site is throwing their own festival in Brooklyn this May and is looking to gather some funds to make it a reality. They've lined up the likes of Nicholas Felton, Tim Schafer, Rod Humble, Chris Poole and so many more to speak. Their goal is high but so is the cost of throwing a one-day conference in New York. Even if you've no interest in going (which you should), it's nice to be aware of these sorts of things happening. I love the continued development of indie game culture and community.

Did you watch the Oscars? Did you see Life of Pi win for cinematography and visual effects? The Westerhoffer acceptance speech is cut short just as he begins to explain how much trouble his business, and his industry, are in. I had no idea about this trouble until I encountered this article yesterday - apparently loads of VFX houses are going out of business. This sums up the issue:

Simply put, governments can offer a film tax incentives to produce work in their country, which lowers the sticker price of VFX work made in that country. To compete and stay afloat, companies that don't benefit from government subsidies have to continually slash their costs. And unlike many other sub-industries within film, like editing, there's no formal visual effects union to, as one artist wrote, "prevent VFX houses from underbidding each other to death."

While I often bemoan the over reliance of CGI these days I can't help but look at something like Before VFX to remember the magic that these production houses are bringing to the table. All and all, an interesting subject to keep an eye on.

SoulPancake is, apparently, a collection of web series about a variety of art and culture topics brought to you by Rainn Wilson. The name is, undeniably, terrible. However, the content is anything but. Take some time to dive into this Subculture series - short documentaries about a load of small communities. This piece on The Art of Puppetry and Marionettes was surprisingly non-creepy and quite sweet. It's a good way to get educated on topics you'd like never learn about.
