"Modern Feminist", the second single from Black Bra, is out today exclusively on Bandcamp (for now). This is actually the very first track I heard from the band way back when demos were first coming together. I've always been struck by the straightforward honesty of the lyrics; something frontwoman Beth Cameron has always excelled at but feels especially potent on this track.
Do me a favor - and, in turn, yourself a favor - go listen to this song while reading the lyrics, I think it adds to the enjoyment.
On a personal note, I'm pretty happy with how the artwork came together; some of my finer work as of recently.
Todd Kemp has been playing around Nashville for... 20 years? His bands The Carter Administration and
Enter The Prudish Few, a new undertaking from Kemp along with Mike Shepherd and Jay Leo Phillips; two musicians I've also always admired for their work in Tower Defense and JLP respectively. Today they release their inaugural single "In A" from the forthcoming album The Eagle Has Left the Building.
These songs are deceptively fun. I mean, they're fun, don't get me wrong but it's not a shallow undertaking. There's an undercurrent of political statements weaving through the lyrics and I think that's what drew me to the project. It's musically memorable but it's also meaningful.
Full album comes out Aug 21st and we'll be releasing some videos and additional singles along the way. Give it a whirl. This is a Bandcamp exclusive for today and then will hit streaming services next week.
Great new project from Brian Miller called Song of the Summer Club. At its core, it's a mixtape. Beyond that, it's a very fun, very well designed website filled with upbeat and enjoyable songs across a variety of genres. It is, in short, a nice place to visit.
It's also admirable that it has a shelf life. According to the About page, it'll be updated through September 1st and then go into hibernation until next summer. I love that.
Apparently there is a documentary about Blind Melon singer Shannon Hoon entitled All I Can Say that is derived from his own home video footage. From the looks of the trailer, it seems to be entirely comprised of his own footage; which is pretty remarkable.
I was a big Blind Melon fan - particularly after they released Soup, which was sonically much more up my alley than the debut record that had "No Rain" on it. That said, after Hoon's death the video for "Galaxie" always felt much more troubled in hindsight, an almost literal depiction that he was off the rails.
Regardless, the doc looks good and I'm happy to see that Oscilloscope Labs is releasing it with a bunch of partners so you can purchase it and kick back to your local record store.
The Book of Horrors.
I trained a machine learning algorithm on over 16,000 pages of the printed @Argos_Online catalog, then set it to work creating its own nightmarish book.

What Milton Glaser gave to New York will long survive him.
I❤️New York was the perfect logo at the time he created it and remains so today.
We lost a brilliant designer and a great New Yorker.

Back with another dose of distractions. Can't believe it's almost July but I suppose time is both flying by and crawling at the same time. As a kid, I always wondered how memorable the year 2020 would be and, turns out, it's really making a name for itself in the history books.
Hope you're safe, hope you're sane and hope you're able to enjoy some distractions.
Friday I'm in Love [Bardcore] - did you know there's a whole genre of re-inventing modern songs as if they were performed by a Bard? Let Bardcore into your life.
If you're in a band and stuck inside for 3 months, why not find a way to be creative with the available free time? Sure, you can't play a show or even practice together but you can re-arrange, re-record and perform a video.. together, apart.
This New Man undertaking for Everything Slows Down (Shut In Version) isn't uniquely novel - lots of other bands and performers are doing something similar - but I love how they re-invented the song, captured the doldrums of being at home but still managed to keep it fun. I'm biased of course but it's a real delight.
A few months ago, I released the World Peace - TNSU 7”. As of last Saturday, 100% of sales will be donated to the People’s Breakfast in Oakland. There are ~50 left and I’m covering all shipping costs.
