Parisian Transgender Women, 1959

The NYTimes is running a wonderful piece in their Lens section on Christer Stromholm (later known as Christer Christian), a Swedish photographer who spent a chunk of time in France during the late 50's, early 60's with a group of transgender women. The portraits shared in the piece vary between the beautifully posed, the casually intimate and the heartwarmingly comfortable. The images are stunning and worth a deeper look into his portfolio.
I can't help but feel heartbroken looking at these images from 60 years ago and thinking about recent initiatives to try and redefine gender. Articulating it further than that is difficult and bound to lack the eloquence it deserves.
