Way back in 2006 I recall encountering Microsoft's emerging Photosynth technology. It created 3D panorama images based on user images and their own technology. I didn't really get the practical application behind it but it certainly seemed to make more sense when they announced their Augmented-Reality Maps. And now? It's an app. And, honestly, it's a surprisingly impressive one. Having to share your photos via the Photosynth.net community is a bit of a drawback but not entirely unexpected. The actual app - the process of creating 3D panorama images - is incredibly impressive. Basically, you point the camera at what you want and the software senses the edges and does all the merging for you.. no more lining things up, it just knows where one viewport ends and the next one should begin. Oh, and it's free. So why not try it out?
