Remember the name Jack Gallant as he and his cohorts at the University of California, Berkeley have recently unveiled a technique that allows them to recreate brain activity into video. Basically, they put people into a fMRI, showed them movie trailers and recorded the brain activity. Using some major computing crunching they convert that information into volumetric pixels (voxels) and cross referenced that with 18 millions seconds of palette information from other YouTube videos. Honestly, having read this article over a few times I comprehend what we're seeing in the results but I'm not entirely clear how they were determined. This video shows the process - the top part being actual movie, the left column being what the MRI grabbed and the rest being the palette used to reach that conclusion.

The big hub-bub is that, eventually, this could be used to record and playback brain activity while you're asleep. Meaning, you could rewatch your dreams. Yes, that's a huge big of Sci-Fi extrapolation and forecasting but it's good to have goals.
