Say I'm Pretty, available now

posted February 1, 2019 #

Double whammy with the releases over at yk records as today, Feb 1st, marks the debut full-length release from Patrick Damphier, Say I'm Pretty. If you've been following along, there's been a Billboard track debut, a MxDwn debut for a song with the late Richard Swift and two wonderful live videos for - one for "Killers in the Closet" and one for "Odd Man Out" - that both feature a host of special guests. That's a helluva run-on sentence but that album is out today.
The record features a bunch of special guests - Jessica Lea Mayfield, the aforementioned Richard Swift, Nicole Atkins and Molly Parden among them. It's streaming everywhere, downloadable or on limited edition vinyl.

I classify the album was "nuanced indie pop" - which doesn't really cover the sound but it's an entry point of understanding. Every time I listen to the record from top to bottom, I hear a little something new. I know that sounds unbelievable but there are a myriad of flourishes throughout that manage to grab your ear each time - maybe it's a low vocal harmony that slipped past, maybe it's a keyboard swirl, maybe it's xylophone but there's usually something that jumps out. It's a fun reward for multiple plays.

Patrick is mostly known for his work in the studio - producing lots of artists and playing a mind-boggling amount of instruments - so it's a nice feeling to be part of a release that showcases his songwriting and performance abilities. Give it a whirl and then give it a whirl again.
