Shipp Studio: 2018
posted November 27, 2018 #
Back in 2017, I mentioned The Shipp Studio Archive, an online repository of images from 1948 to 1978 emerging from Centerville, TN.
The Bitter Southerner recently did some further research on the subject with their "A Little Family Photo Studio" piece. The basic history of the archive is covered but they also speak with photography and history experts on the diversity and quality of the archive. It's not uncommon to find an enormous archive of photos from that period of time but it is quite rare to find a body of work that is from the South and captures all races and all income levels; particularly in a tasteful way.
The photos have been turned into a book entitled A Community in Black & White and it contains 16,000 images from the collection. Impressive all around, to say the very least.
