Reinventing the chat wheel is not a simple task. Apple's Messages did a great job by tying in your text messages with direct IM communication.
Hipchat took the concepts of IRC and made it more accessible (and more functional). And now I'm tinkering around with
#Slack - a very well designed chat tool that does lots of the same things as Hipchat - link augmentation, notifications, dynamic channels, webhooks, etc. - but I'm not sure what their
thing is. What sets them apart? I'm not sure but it's a snappy looking app worth spending some time with.
