So Apple announced the latest addition to the iPod family of mp3 players today - the iPod mini. Steve Jobs noted in his keynote speech that the new iPod mini was only $50 more than the majority of 256mb flash card players available on the market. What he failed to mention was that for just another additional $50 - you can have yourself one of the real deal "lowend" 15gb iPod models. For a company that is claiming that they are trying to gain a larger marketshare with a more affordable mp3 player, they sure are charging alot.
I'm not arguing the quality of the iPod.. or the iPod mini.. I am sure they are both incredible. I'm sure the UI is unparalled in the mp3 player world vs. these two. The point here is that the company is saying "look, it's only $50 more than a flash player and you get 4 gigs!" but for only $100 more than a flash player you could get 15 gig. What's the incentive to get the iPod mini? $50? It would be have been incredibly smarter on their part to charge $200.. or $175. If you want loads of people to buy them, give them a freaking deal.
Once again, Apple has proven that they are out to make a great product and then see how much they can overcharge for it based on similar prices in the marketplace.
