There's a 1995 documentary called Wigstock: The Movie that captures the drag festival that occurred in the East Village during the 1980s and 1990s. It features the likes of Lady Bunny, RuPaul, Debbie Harry, Deee-Lite and tons more. It's a nice peek inside of an event that took place at the height of the AIDS crisis and during a time when LGBTQ people weren't as empowered to stand for their rights (it's a long road, don't get me wrong).
There's a new HBO documentary called Wig that captures the revival of Wigstock, in its largest form ever. Expect to see Lady Bunny, Latrice Royale, Miss Vanjie, plenty of incredible outfits and outpourings of the benefits of drag and drag culture. The film releases on June 18th.
