`Tis the season to get Spoopy! It's the 19th now so there's not a whole lot of time left to start getting your head straight for the holiday season. Embrace Halloween fully as it opens the gates to the end of the year. Don't resist it, dive right in.
Bollywood Superman - yes, you may have seen it before but does it ever really get old? No, it does not. Let this inspire your Halloween.
Boston Dynamics Uptown Funk - look, I know they were trying to make something endearing here showing that these robo-dogs can also dance to your favorite mall song but, for me, this is just further establishing how terrifying our future robot overlords will be.
Keeping with the theme of sharing things I'm helping to put out into the world, the seventh episode of Vidalotry is now available. This episode explores the relationship between Gore Vidal and the Kennedy family. Turns out, somewhat unsurprisingly at this point, it's a contentious and complicated relationship.
There's only ten episodes in total for this particular podcast so we're definitely on the backend. It's a tough sell to convince people to listen to a podcast about Gore Vidal - a guy they likely know very little about that's been dead for six years but I was in that same boat and have been enamored with these episodes. They're relatively short, informative and give some nice historical perspective that our political landscape has always been tumultuous and there's always been champions of the underdog.
As I mentioned on Friday, work has been unrelenting lately. As such, finding time to browse and cobble together blog posts here has been difficult. So, in lieu of posting things that other people have made, I'm going to share things that I'm helping to put out into the world. Seems like a decent tradeoff, right?
As such, here's Episode 10 of Hott Minute- the comedy podcast I help produce over on We Own This Town. Ten episodes may not sound like a lot but it's been an extremely fun learning experience and I'm happy to be a part of this thing.
This particular episode is great because it features a brand new theme song from Tristen and has the show's first special guest, long time friend Brooks Alford.
Do me a favor, go Subscribe so by the time you read these news posts you already know.
It's been four years since the last album from Mark Oliver Everett's Eels and even longer since I've really dug my heels into a solid listen. With the release of The Deconstruction comes the video for "Bone Dry", a stop-motion piece featuring a bearded skeleton traversing the horrors of a graveyard. There are clear influences of The Skeleton Dance and The Nightmare Before Christmas but who wouldn't want those two things fused together into a music video?! It works extremely well and is a shoe-in for all future Halloween playlists.
November! I've got plenty to say about plans for 2018 but it feels premature with two months left to go. Laying groundwork now for some good stuff ahead.
Here's some distractions, we all know we need them.
What Is Spoopy? - yea, it's a belated Halloween video but this song is stuck in my head. I laugh every time.
Sony Aibo - new electronic dog from Sony. It's impressive? It's cute? It's kind of creepy? The future is weird.
BULLY - Feel the Same - great new stop motion animation for the single off of Bully's latest, Losing.
Happy Halloween! Here's some appropriate links for the day. The above video, Mr. Sandman (Breakmaster Cylinder Remix), is an intense viewing but incredibly well edited.
It feels great to get that Halloween mix out there. Hopefully you enjoy it (and the WOTT episode that preceeded it). This playlist is a mix of the standard distractions mixed with some Halloween theme. Why not get you the goods before the weekend instead of waiting until actual Halloween, which falls on a Tuesday. Lame.
An Unlikely Family - I stole this gif from caspar and put it on Vimeo so I could watch that delightful grin forever.
Scary Gary - not quite as classic as the Pumpkin Dance but a well executed, corny, weatherman prank.
Gooseborks - incredibly stupid but absolutely satisfying in that stupidity.
Are You Ready for Freddy? - a Fat Boys classic. The minute-long intro is a bit grueling but worth it for the very awkward Freddy raps.
Ahhhhh - there is a full video that goes with this but do you really need anything more?
Crumbling Castle - an 11-minute track from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard that has one of the most consistency engaging analog video effects I've seen in maybe ever.
It's been a little over a year since I posted my last mix and since 2015 for my last Halloween mix. My lack of Halloween 2016 mix will likely haunt* me for awhile but it just made me all the more hellbent on making sure to get it right in 2017. So, I'm happy to present SPELL CASTER, roughly an hour of music to listen to while browsing your neighborhood hunting for the undead and random ghosts. Or maybe just to listen to in your office at full blast while there's a cauldron of dry ice creating a sweet mood.
I was putting together a special Halloween episode of the We Own This Town podcast and received a number of great recommendations from Lance Conzett of bands to include. I decided why not have Lance curate the entire episode? He's a fantastic photographer, journalist and Halloween aficionado.
So, that happened! Volume 96 of the podcast is curated entirely by Lance and features a number of local Nashville artists that I'd never even heard of. It really spans a number of genres too - from Southern gothic darkness to house electronic music (with a spooky spin) to indie rock. It's all over the place but an excellent listen.
While I always enjoy a vintage Halloween photo dump, I often enjoy perusing archives of something a bit more recent - the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. The Manhattan spectacle has been going since 1974 and consistently features some of the most impassioned costumes on the block.
Shaboi, everyone's favorite elusive Halloween music maker, recently appeared as a guest host on Nashville Mixtapes and provided two hours of spooky tunes to enjoy. From Edgar Winter Group to Bing Crosby to Bobby Brown and Goblin, he covers a lot of ground.
It's streaming in its entirety right over here, so get to listening.
The subreddit Vintage Obscura has been mining for rare gems for years. Their sharing policies contain rules like: "Is it at least 25 years old? Does it have under 30k views on YouTube? Under 50k on Last.fm?" All done in an attempt to find sounds that you haven't heard before but probably should.
They also release a Vintage Obscura Halloween mix every year, composed of the songs they've spent the past year digging through.
Side A is entitled 'Swinging Ghosts' and Side B is 'Forget the Light Forever' - helping to frame the songs selected for each set. It's an enjoyable listen to help get you in the proper headspace for whatever spooky rituals you enjoy participating in this time of year.
