Friday Videos - Oct 20th, 2017

posted October 20, 2017 #

Every week I browse through these Funny or Die GIFs to find an amusing bit of cover art for Friday Videos. The spooked cat this week seemed appropriate for the impending Halloween season but I also loved this one and then immediately felt bad for loving it. Maybe you'll have the same experience.
  • Star Trek Clips but Out Of Context - quite possibly the best 2 minutes and 36 seconds you'll have this week.
  • A Funny Shave - a silent film from 1905 in which a man hallucinates after eating some shaving cream. It's as slow paced as you'd imagine a film from 1905 would be but that final reveal is worth the investment. True terror.
  • Cut for Time: Climate Change - so far, the best gags of SNL this season have been the skits that were cut. Maybe it's an intentional trend? I still watch the show every week and I can't fully explain why.
  • Proof that Mark Zuckerberg is Reptilian - love a good conspiracy theory mixed with terrible clipart.
  • Jim & Andy - trailer for a forthcoming documentary about Jim Carrey's portrayal of Andy Kaufman and why all of the behind-the-scenes footage was never released, until this movie.
  • Living with Jigsaw - I went in with the lowest expectations but chortled in amusement more than once.
  • KXVO Pumpkin Dance + Shaboi - that's right, a repeat from last week because I absolutely never tire of Pumpkin Dance or Shaboi this time of year. You shouldn't either.
Need something more? How about this hilariously long piece on the @dril twitter account?

Vac-tastic Plastic

posted October 16, 2017 #

Vintage Halloween is, inarguably, the Best Halloween so it's great to see Retro-a-go-go! keeping the vibe alive with their Vac-Tastic Plastic Masks designed by Doug P'gosh. Each of these retro looking masks is about 2 feet tall, which means wearing them will be awkward and bizarre - aka perfectly weird. I love that the designs range from a Mars Attack alien to a Zombie Astronaut to a suave Dracula. A little something for everybody.

Shaboi, 2017

posted October 13, 2017 #

Eight years ago on this day, Friday, October 13th, 2008, the one and only release from Shaboi was unleashed on the world. Curse Walk is ten songs of Halloween tales spanning an absurd number of genres - country folk, rap, electronic instrumentals, spoken word cautionary tales and even an R&B lament for spiritual freedom.
Given that it's mid-October, now is the perfect time to dive back in. It's streaming everywhere or you can buy the digital version if you're looking to throw some appreciation towards the ghoul responsible for it all.

Basil Gogos

posted September 27, 2017 #

I don't want to jump the gun on Halloween too much but with the recent passing of Basil Gogos, I think it's a fine time to visit the vast troves of monsters, creatures and Rob Zombie's that the man painted. This Church of Halloween repository is a great place to start and then you can read more about his life and work over on The Times or good ole Wikipedia. The depicitions of Frankenstein's Monster, Bride of Frankenstein and the more vintage Dracula's have such an empathy for the characters - monsters just trying to make it in the world.

Friday Videos - Dec 2nd, 2016

posted December 2, 2016 #

December already, huh? That time of year when we round up our favorites from the previous eleven months and do our best to wind down for a little bit. At least, that's how I see it.

  • The VVitch as Wes Anderson Movie - on one level, this works as a funny editing exercise. On another level, it doesn't work at all because The VVitch was terrifying and no amount of pink lettering can offset that fear.
  • Doot Star - and here's a Shrek'ed out Skull Trumpet playing Smash Mouth; just to keep things balanced in the world.
  • Go-Go Dancer Loop - there are various TV's all around the Vimeo office that you can put any video up on, looping forever. This is a perfect candidate and has been pleasing our office all week.
  • Walk the Dinosaur - in hunting down various versions of the Was (Not Was) classic, we stumbled on this bizarre Chuck-E-Cheese fan video. It's a video that goes from weird and cutesy (for kids!) on a brief watch and becomes unbearable and nightmarish the more you subject yourself to it. I assume most kids programming works this way.
  • Unrest in Westworld - how about a Protomen song blended with the original Westworld film? Yep, perfect.
  • All I Want For Christmas is Halloween - a pretty good song featuring some adorable little ghouls.
  • Big Black Delta - Bitten by the Apple - the official video for this great song off of Tragame Tierra is perfect.
  • Thunder - I shouldn't have but I died laughing.
When you're done with all that, watch this. You're welcome.

Halloween Playlist 2016

I didn't post a Halloween music mix this year but I did give you plenty to listen to. I also gave an additional playlist of mostly Halloween jams. But if you still need more, let this be your infinite loop for the day: Have a great Halloween!

Halloween, NYC 1993

Halloween is a visual treat no matter where you live but Halloween in NYC in the early 90's was certainly something else. This archive of photos is a nice reminder of the kind of all-out costuming that went on. The first color photo in that set is sure to stop you in your tracks and it just gets better from there.

What an awkward weekend for Halloween! Tonight's the night to get hype for your weekend but technically you gotta save a little bit of that festive juice for Monday - when the real deal happens. So, here's a playlist of Halloween-ish items to get you in the mood without being a full on ghoulish offering. Many of these are classics but I think you'll enjoy the revisit. Also, RIP to VINE but Huzzah to all the great favorites showing up.

I'm a little miffed at myself for not getting together a proper Halloween mix as I have in years past but I suppose there's still time. In lieu of that, enjoy the following:

Happy weekend! I'll be real. I'm writing this on a plane right now and the connection is not great. That being said, I'm not that guy, I'm just explaining why pickings are somewhat slim.

Be sure to read through this and this at some point this weekend, just for funsies and discussion topics.
