First and foremost, let's remember that Tony Hale is a national treasure and should be appreciated as such.

Got some new irons in the fire with yk Records this week. A handful of releases on the horizon I'm really excited about and looking forward to sharing. Not much to tell beyond that but once you put a schedule down on paper, it really starts to feel real.

If you didn't hear it already, go check out the the Spotify playlist from The Mute Group. It's a wild ride.

Here's a smattering of distractions to really drive you into the weekend.

Crave On - Ace On The Outspeaker

posted May 10, 2019 #

I hear a great deal of Nashville based music while curating the We Own This Town Music podcast and recently stumbled across the latest Crave On record, Ace on the Outspeaker. Who is Crave On? I had no idea but they've been releasing interesting records since 2016 and managed to fly entirely underneath my radar. Shame.
The album itself is a fascinating blend of folk and krautrock. How these two things could manage to blend together in a way that isn't laughable absurd is beyond me but they did it. They really did it.

The album is streaming on Spotify and all the other usual spots, so I suggest looking it up. Start with "Ouroboros" or "Rust Under the Hood."

Daly

I don't get a ton of time to just randomly peruse the Internet anymore but I am subscribed to a number of design newsletters that occasionally contain some gems. One such recent item is the website for the NYC design firm Daly. They do a stellar job of using giant, impactful, type and breaking the grid often (where appropriate). It's a wonderful color palette and just a pleasurable experience to browse.

Most interestingly, they specialize in Crowdfunding campaigns. If you've seen the Kickstarters for RAMS or the NASA Standards Manual, you've seen their work. It's not an area of focus I've thought of as a business practice but, clearly, it's working out great for them.

The Mute Group, Inspirations and Influences

posted May 9, 2019 #

As I remarked on Twitter, I really like it when bands post playlists of their influences and inspiration. The Mute Group recently posted their own, entitled if nobody wants to hear it and it is, unsurprisingly, a rather eclectic undertaking.
Just looking at tracks 2, 3, 4 you can see it jump from choir chants to Prince to old gospel. Generally, you might assume that these things don't go together but if you've listened to their album Sinister Hand, it all makes sense.

i've literally never encountered this in the wild but it's SORT OF brilliant - just a link repo so instagram profiles can contain more than one link.

Albatross Soup Premiere

posted May 8, 2019 #

Way back in 2017 I posted about a trailer for a forthcoming animated short film called Albatross Soup. The conceit of the piece is that 50 people were asked the same riddle and recorded in trying to decipher the answer. The accompanying animation takes their guesses and turns them into a psychedelic narrative.

The full animation is now out in the world for your enjoyment and well worth a watch. It's less than 7 minutes and the animation style is captivating. Oh, and the riddle is a pretty dark one, so be ready for that.

Met Gala 2019

posted May 7, 2019 #

Look, I understand that the MET Gala is a big event thrown for rich people to put on extreme clothing that celebrates their opulence in a time when we have a lot of problems to be concerned with. Not disagreeing with you there but I'm also not going to let that stop me from enjoying the offerings. Spend some time with this massive gallery of images and try to tell me that this Ezra Miller getup isn't the greatest thing you've seen in 2019.
