This Sunday, Feb 3rd, I turn forty years old. I've got plenty of thoughts about such a thing but I won't bother with trying to eloquently express them here as this blog is certainly not known to be a haven of eloquence. However, I will say, it's a mixed bag of melancholy and excitement. My younger self didn't foresee 40 in the way it's actually turned out and I'm 100% comfortable with that. Younger selves don't know a damn thing.
But thanks for reading! I've been doing this blog since my 20's and it's crazy to think I'm still at it. With that being said, here's some healthy distractions:
- Say I'm Pretty commercial - hey, I made a little ad for the Patrick Damphier record I helped put out!
- King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Cyboogie - you may have seen this posted previously but this band, a favorite of mine, has officially entered their TRANS era.
- Deluxe Horoscopes for February - as far as I'm concerned, this is quality Internet right here. Don't know what it is. Don't want to know more. Just want to enjoy the oddity.
- Fat Juul Rip - less on the quality side, more on the stupidity enjoyment.
- Steve Buscemi + Jennifer Lawrence Mashup - in the future, nothing is real.
- Almost Struck By Lightning compilation - remember, death is all around you. At least stay for the tree strike about a minute in, unreal (but real).
- Chonky boi on escalator - and, just like that, delight embraces you.

Double whammy with the releases over at
yk records as today, Feb 1st, marks the debut full-length release from
Patrick Damphier,
Say I'm Pretty. If you've been following along, there's been a
Billboard track debut, a
MxDwn debut for a song with the late Richard Swift and two wonderful live videos for - one for "
Killers in the Closet" and one for "
Odd Man Out" - that both feature a host of special guests. That's a helluva run-on sentence but
that album is out today.
The record features a bunch of special guests - Jessica Lea Mayfield, the aforementioned Richard Swift, Nicole Atkins and Molly Parden among them. It's
streaming everywhere,
downloadable or on
limited edition vinyl.
I classify the album was "nuanced indie pop" - which doesn't
really cover the sound but it's an entry point of understanding. Every time I listen to the record from top to bottom, I hear a little something new. I know that sounds unbelievable but there are a myriad of flourishes throughout that manage to grab your ear each time - maybe it's a low vocal harmony that slipped past, maybe it's a keyboard swirl, maybe it's xylophone but there's usually something that jumps out. It's a fun reward for multiple plays.
Patrick is mostly known for his work in the studio - producing lots of artists and playing a mind-boggling amount of instruments - so it's a nice feeling to be part of a release that showcases his songwriting and performance abilities. Give it a
whirl and then give it a whirl again.

Yesterday, Jan 31st, the debut release from
The Mute Group was released on my
yk Records. The album,
Sinister Hand, is available on
all the streaming services, as a
download or on
limited edition vinyl.
It's a beautiful record but, honestly, one I've struggled to describe to others. It's "art" rock, in that it doesn't fit into any of your regular genre classifications but that feels like a pejorative. It's worldly; as it's influenced by everything from New Orleans Jazz to Gregorian Chants but it's still rock music; so that's not quite apt either. The band calls them "Dark Operetta's" - which certainly feels closer to the proper kernel but downplays the catchiness and pop sensibilities at the core of it all.
These days, the expectation is that music should fit into a fairly neat column on a spreadsheet but The Mute Group operates outside of that. I'm very happy to be involved with releasing this record and hope that listeners take the time to sit with it for more than the 30-second preview. If you need a little prodding, start with "
Rodney O" and I think you'll get it.

Super bummed to read that @FondObject is closing its doors in February. So many good times in that backyard! Hope, somehow, they can find a new home. But I also really love this farewell message: “just keep on moving & fighting & starting rad shit.” https://t.co/Uzs05CSC07

I've yet to see it in person but I'm fascinated by
The Paper Towel Zine; a risograph printed, limited edition, art zine that is dispensed via a paper towel holder. It's remarkably clever and surprisingly simple; a wonderful combination.
Risograph prints are by
Risology Club and designs are by
Graeme Morris; just some additional accounts to keep your eyes on.
