Olivetti Elea

posted January 29, 2019 #

You can fawn over Apple designs all day long but nothing will top the industrial design of the Olivetti Elea 9003; a mainframe developed in the late 1950's with an interface by Ettore Sottsass, a founding member of the Memphis Group. For further evidence of this beauty of design, check out the detail image here. A stunner if there ever was one.

Mort Garson - Plantasia

posted January 29, 2019 #

I posted about this a few years back but the YouTube video I had linked has been removed. So, it's time for a revisit.

Composer Mort Garson was a pioneer of electronic music and made a number of heavily themed albums using the, then new, Moog synthesizer. There's an entire series of Zodiac Signs albums, an album entitled Wozard of Iz inspired by The Wizard of Oz and even an album of dark synth compositions released under the pseudonym Lucifer called Black Mass.

But for my money, nothing tops Plantasia, a ridiculously fun and upbeat album of songs meant to be played to plants to encourage growth. The instrumentation is borderline cheesy but feels so triumphant and optimistic, it's impossible not to love.

Plantasia was recently featured in an episode of HBO's High Maintenance and I can only hope that serves to bring some new fans to the Garson realm; as it is a fascinating place to be.

Give me the unbridled confidence of a white male billionaire who has watched the last two years of rage, devastation and sadness in this country and comes away from it with the conclusion that what the world really needs now is a guy who sells lattes to be in charge of all of it.

It’s rather rude of @Dropbox to eat up 100% of the CPU whenever it feels like it, eh? Here’s a thing for your ~/.bashrc: alias throttle_dropbox='sudo cputhrottle $(pgrep -o Dropbox) 20'

WOTT 129: Crispy Bois With Cold Lunch Recordings

posted January 28, 2019 #

I've been pushing myself this year to release a new episode of We Own This Town Music every week. It's a bit daunting but it forces me to do more than just scour for new music. One thing I've been wanting to do forever is interview local Nashville labels, event promoters and other entities of the "scene" to get more insight on their individual stories.

So, with that in mind, I sat down with Cold Lunch Recordings - label and promoter that has been doing some really wonderful things over the past few years. Aside from putting out tons of great music, they've also been putting on bigger, experiential, shows like Spew Fest, Taco-Rama, Discovery Fest, Bob Fest and tons more.
The conversation is embedded above. I suggest you give it a listen to learn about their history but, on the whole, I suggest you give them a deep dive with the music they've been releasing. Try this one out and if you're not convinced "Working Man" is one of the best songs you've never heard, let me know.

Entire World, Instagram

posted January 28, 2019 #

Austin Gray has been undertaking branding, illustration and design under the name Entire World for the past five years and posting a good deal of that work on his official site.

Fortunately, he's now posting some work on Instagram as well under the name @entireworld.us, naturally. Some of these are unreleased projects, abandoned ideas or iterations that never saw the light of day; which is always fun to see.

Osmo Pocket

posted January 28, 2019 #

The axiom of "the best camera is the one you have on you" is generally great advice. I used to pine for a DSLR but knew that carrying around an extra satchel of gear would actually lead to fewer photos, not more. My iPhone does more than the job necessary... most of the time.

But recently I've been intrigued by this Osmo Pocket device. It's a camera that can do image stabilization via the gimbal mounted lens, it can do automated panormas, motionlapse and log exposure nightshots. It's got a lot of bells and whistles and it's pretty tiny. I've not used one but the demo videos make the interface look... interesting! And there's a whole iOS app component that can, optionally, go with it to give more control. The #osmopocket tag on Instagram has plenty of examples of it in use.

I'm not convinced I need a secondary camera on me at any time but I do love the options available here. It's a touch expensive ($350 USD) but that's really the biggest barrier to my interest.

Let's switch it up this week. Here's some distracting but longer form videos, peppered with the occasional stupidity.

The Mute Group - From the Island to the Mountain

posted January 25, 2019 #

Next week The Mute Group will release their debut album Sinister Hand on yk Records. In celebration of said event, they'll be playing an instore at Grimeys and a release show at The Basement (alongside Jasmin Kaset and The Robe).

Additionally, they've released the official video for "From the Island to the Mountain", embedded above. Much like their previous creations, it's a bit of a work of art, mesmerizing from start to finish with slow changes as you stick with it. The flashing reveals are compelling enough but it really picks up in the back half.

TLDR; new video from a band I'm working with and I really like it. Watch the whole thing.
