First Friday Videos of 2019 and I'm a little shorthanded. I've been enjoying the time off since Christmas and haven't really browsed a ton of "funny" lately. So, this one is going to be a bit more eclectic.. maybe that's an okay thing.
- Ball & Stick - I don't claim to understand what is happening here but I suspect there's a rich history behind Bill Wurtz that I should understand, I'm just not there yet.
- Phillip Seymour Hoffman & Paul Thomas Anderson - a mini-documentary showcasing the history and intense friendship between these two talents. Very much enjoyed.
- Blood Dome - Rick and Morty - in general, I keep Rick & Morty at arm's length because the intense fandom around it is just too much (for me). However, when it crosses paths with Paul Robertson, I can't look away.
- Amy Sedaris, Greenwich Apartment Tour - it's been this way forever but Amy Sedaris manages to find the balance between adorable and subversively strange. It's why Strangers with Candy worked and it's why this tour is worth your time.
- How Mary Poppins Changed Movies Forever - I can't explain why but this piece on Mary Poppins is really a brief history of the green screen and how Petro Vlahos revolutionized it. The most bonkers part is that the Disney movie was shot with a special camera they built that they could never recreate. One and done. How is that possible!?
- One Trillion to the Tenth Power - don't ask yourself if it's real or not, just enjoy it.

Just wanted to give you all a quick heads up that I've finished creating GIF's of the SNL episode hosted by Garth Brooks with musical guest Chris Gaines. If you aren't aware, I'm on a quest to get them to acknowledge the 20-year anniversary of this milestone event... or at least angling to make a ridiculous site documenting it. High level, here's the new stuff you should know:
- @GarthGainesSNL is a new dedicated Twitter account for the endeavor. Go follow it. I'll be looking into automated tweets for the countdown but, overall, I hope to keep it more organic than that.
- There are 180 gifs on the official site, broken down by segment or sketch. If you haven't seen Garth as a WXLU news anchor dressed up like a kids show host, you're missing out.
- All the images are also on Giphy, should you find it more helpful to find them there.

If you're in the market for a long read, this Lauren Hough piece "
I Was a Cable Guy. I Saw the Worst of America" is a wonderful read. It feels like early Chuck Palahniuk prose, cataloging a litany of perverse behaviors and unbelievable experiences except
these are real. Obviously, it's a bit sad as well whenever someone documents their worst interactions with humanity but it's fascinating, nonetheless.

Pretty fascinating case study over here on the
Slack illustration voice from
Alice Lee. Not only does the piece do a great job of documenting the process but it goes into influences that inspired it
and the inspiration that it inspired in others. Turns out Mary Blair's Disney illustrations and Charley Harper played a big part in the direction of the style.
Love this bit on the established rules.
1. Let's figure out the rules of the universe first, and
2. Once we have a grasp on that, then we can start building out the rest of our world and filling it with characters.
Simple but effective. Also, all too uncommon to make sure to do the homework first in deciphering the world rules.

Electric Sky Wine site is
jarring. Yes, they managed to make some pretty gradients on their cans but the website is an onslaught of flickering color changes. I'm all for something crazy and experimental but my brain is scrambled using this. Give it a whirl!
