Uncle Skeleton's Tiny Universe

posted September 21, 2018 #

Friend of the blog Casey Pugh has been working on a number of projects over at Vimeo for the past year that largely involve new technology and how Vimeo video can interact with them. One such fruit of his labors is this hefty tutorial on Tiny Planets - aka taking a 360 video and morphing it into an orb. The resulting video is beautiful.

But I'm kind of burying the lede here. The music set to this wonderful experiment is by none other than yk Records own Uncle Skeleton, the track "Cocoa Nibs" to be specific. So, double whammy! Casey makes a wonderful tool for creating captivating tiny worlds and Uncle Skeleton gets a free music video. Win Win.

San Dimas Today with Chris Matheson

posted September 19, 2018 #

As you may recall, I'm helping produce and distribute a podcast called San Dimas Today that functions as "an in-depth look at and celebration of all things Bill & Ted." I understand Bill & Ted isn't for everyone but for those that have a place in their hearts for the two films (and all the ephemera around them), it's a good time.

For their second episode, they managed to land an interview with Chris Matheson, one of the creators and writers on both films. Along with Ed Solomon, Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves they are the heart of the films. All of the cast and crew contributed a ton to experience but without those four people, the films wouldn't be anywhere close to what we know. TLDR, intervewing Matheson is a big deal for a Bill & Ted podcast.
You can hear the episode on their site, over on We Own This Town or just subscribe to the thing. It's a great listen and incredibly insightful for anyone with tangential interest in the films.

The Realistic Magic Of Hal Ashby

posted September 19, 2018 #

Incredibly good article here on the director Hal Ashby and his completely obsessive work style. It was beyond unhealthy but certainly served him well in the creation of Harold and Maude, Shampoo and Heat. He's also noted as one of the few editors to ever make the successful transition to director; which is likely due to his bonkers work ethic.

I'm not saying I admire it but I do find it fascinating to read about.

Uber Rebrand 2018

posted September 19, 2018 #

I'll be totally honest, I don't really care about Uber. All of the scandals and debacles around them over the years really soured me on supporting such a company so I tend to put my money towards other ride share services that don't come off quite as dirtbag-esque. Even with new leadership in place, I can't shake the feeling. Which I think makes me a prime target for their 2018 Rebrand.

This Case Study examining the process and thoughts behind the new logo, typeface and design system are fascinating to look through and fun to look at. As a designer, it's enjoyable to look at - no doubt about it. Even the contentious square U is worthy of a discussion - overly simplistic or strikingly recognizable?

Even after having scoured these pages, I feel absolutely zero percent different about the company but I'll give them a hearty thumbs up on their case study.

My dear friend @jamiebradley & I have a podcast called "Hott Minute" and we just released the first episode of S2! GREAT theme song from @TRUEMUSICBAND and lots of interesting discussion about who is hot, and why https://t.co/GocYRwTvfq

The Show Stopped But The Crushin' Didn't

posted September 18, 2018 #

Speaking of Season 2's, the newest season of Hott Minute launched. It is, as ever, a hilarious chat between two unbelievably witty women who have an uncanny grasp of pop culture that reaches back an absurd amount of time.
The launch of their second season feels like a launch of the second season of We Own This Town in general. Hott Minute was the first show that came aboard when I started distributing podcasts back in January and I've learned a lot. I hope to continue learning even more and escalate the Hott Minute undertaking to bigger and better places.

As with every podcast in the world, I suggest you subscribe, just to ensure you don't miss a thing.

fan/fic Season 2

posted September 18, 2018 #

The second season of fan/fiction w/ andrew/zach starts today and the format is a little different than the previous. First of all, instead of releasing the entire Season "Netflix Style" in one go, we'll be on the bi-weekly cadence of something new on a regular basis. Furthermore, our illustrious hosts are partaking in interviews with various insightful people to help further understand the drive of creativity and fan/fic.
If you never listened to the first season because you thought it looked too nerdy or just not up your alley, I suggest a re-visit on this. Instead of just talking about individual stories and dissecting them, there's a lot more talk about why fan/fic exists at all.

The Untold Truth Of Chris Gaines

posted September 18, 2018 #

I have a healthy(ish) obsession with Chris Gaines, the pop star alter ego of Garth Brooks that crashed and burned in the late 90's. The whole thing was a baffling move by a country artist that was, undeniably, at the top of his game. It's such a fascinating topic because I also understand the desire to make such a move - ultimately Brooks desired to be seen outside of the Country realm. Or maybe he just wanted to have a fun side project (plenty of others have done this).

So, of course, when I see a piece called The Untold Truth of Chris Gaines, I am locked in. It's a nice overview of the entire undertaking if you're not familiar with it and I hope this leads the way to a proper Oral History of Chris Gaines from all those involved.

Let this also serve as a reminder of the Garth Brooks / Chris Gaines Countdown, just 421 days at time of this posting until the 20th anniversary of when Brooks and Gaines hosted SNL together as one.
